March 2, 2018

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Many members of our school community have been asking how they can help in keeping our campus safe. Here is an opportunity accompanied by a request from Ms. Yuhas regarding next week’s Science Night…….

We need your help! In light of recent events, we are asking for volunteers during next week's Science Night. Science Night is an incredibly popular celebration that involves the entire Madeleine community. As such, we need volunteers from any class to secure our outer doors and help keep our school safe.

Volunteers would be expected to stand at an assigned door to prevent anyone from exiting or propping doors open. We have four entrances to secure that evening. We ask that adult volunteers sign up for a brief 30 minute shift between 6:15 and 8:30. At a minimum, we need 16 volunteers to ensure a safe and fun event. Please click here to sign up online. If there aren't enough volunteers, we will have to cancel Science Night this year.

Volunteer slots are from 6:15 - 6:45, 6:45 - 7:15, 7:15 - 7:45, 7:45 - 8:30.

Thank you for your time!
Ann Yuhas

While on the subject of safety and security, please be sure to read the Security Update that has the latest information on last week’s security incident. Click here for the complete document.

With gratitude,
Susan

Madeleine Safety & Security Committee Seeks New Members

Are you interested in safety and security issues at The Madeleine? Then, we need you! Volunteers are needed to serve on this important committee, which meets one evening of each month. The Madeleine Safety & Security Committee has multiple positions (3-year terms) available.

Over the past year the committee has completed work on several projects to help protect parishioners and students in the event of a natural disaster, including the purchase of a secure storage building for earthquake preparedness supplies, the installation of earthquake shut-off valves on gas meters, and the completion of a seismic assessment of the school, church and parish buildings. However, more remains to be done to assure the safety and security of children and adults, both at school and in church, from natural and human disasters.

If you are interested in serving on the Madeleine Safety & Security Committee, please contact the Chair, Marc Gonzales, at gonzalesmarc5@gmail.com or 503-519-8697 with any questions.

SusanNew Madeleine Facebook Feature

We’re very excited to be featuring the incredible individuals who make The Madeleine School and Parish so special with a new series of Q & A’s that will help you get to know the teachers, faculty, and staff in our community better.

We’re kicking off the new series with a conversation with our esteemed principal, Susan Steele. Find out how her own formative education led her into teaching, what her first job was, and many other things we’re pretty sure you didn’t already know about her (like that her favorite song is by Led Zeppelin!)

What drew you to your profession?
In college, I knew that I wanted to work with children as a career. I thought about social work, but then I remembered how much I loved my elementary school days and the nuns who staffed the school. I started out in the classroom, but after a few years my principal suggested I think about going into administration. I liked the idea of supporting teachers and making curriculum decisions.

What do you love most about The Madeleine?
The staff and the community of parents and children.

Read the rest of Susan’s feature on our Facebook page to learn what her favorite song is!

booksBooks Open Minds: Why All Children Need Books Featuring Diverse Characters

Thursday, March 8 from 7 - 8:30pm

As you may recall, this past December we used the proceeds from our $2 Free Dress Day to purchase books from our book fair to donate to The Children's Book Bank.

Now you can join The Children’s Book Bank on March 8th for Books Open Minds for a free event about why all children need books and characters that reflect the diversity of our community.

Moderated by Melody Martínez, Board Member of The Children’s Book Bank, guest panelists will explore how powerful it can be when children see themselves reflected in the books they read.

Thursday, March 8th from 7:00pm to 8:30pm
The Children’s Book Bank, 1915 NE 7th Avenue
Click here to register here by March 2nd.

The Children's Book Bank believes in the transformative power of books to open minds, spark the imagination, and build curiosity. With your support, The Children’s Book Bank is working to ensure all children have the opportunity to see themselves and their possibilities reflected in the books they read.

The mission of The Children’s Book Bank is to increase the chances for children to succeed as future readers, learners, and citizens by filling their homes and lives with quality books.

Audio/Video Ministry needs your help!

We are putting together a team of ministers to assist in running the video screens and sound system during our weekend liturgies. This is a very important ministry, as both sound and screens help to enhance our worship experience.

Both ministries make use of technology, so comfort with an iPad for the sound levels and presentation software on a laptop computer for the video screens are very helpful. (Similar to Powerpoint—you run the presentations that have been built for each Mass, and will not need to edit or create them.)

Interested? Please contact Rich Hammons, rhammons@themadeleine.edu.

Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!
