December 8, 2017

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I know some principals who dread the Christmas holidays because it is difficult to keep students focused, especially the little ones. Yes, visions of sugar plums are already dancing in their heads. I, on the other hand, love this time of the school year. True, I am no longer in the classroom, on the “front lines” so to speak, but I still remember writing holiday stories, doing Christmas crafts, and making secret gifts for mom and dad. And I got to wear all my holiday sweaters that were so popular back then.

The Christmas spirit was certainly on display last night at The Madeleine Marketplace and Tree lighting. I hope you were able to shop for a few things among the many vendors who participated. Kudos to Susie Anderson and Janeen Reilly for planning the event. Special thanks to Catherine Glavan for promoting and organizing the cookie contest. As one of the three judges, please know it was a very difficult task. Congratulations to our own Evelyn C. for winning the adult division, even though she is a seventh grader. A career in baking could be in her future.

Christmas Program

Speaking of Christmas, please be sure to read about and plan for the school Christmas program on Thursday evening, December 14. I think the weather is going to cooperate, so the show will go on. Details on costumes, time, location, are in the blurb below.

Report Cards

Report cards are going home today. Please review the grades and teacher comments with your child. Now is a good time to set some goals for the coming trimester. If you have any questions, be sure to contact your child’s teacher for guidance.

Have a great weekend and happy shopping.

                                                                  Susan

presentThe Present Pass is Coming

December 11

On Monday, December 11th, our friendship families will be gathering for a Christmas celebration. For the activity each student will need to bring a small wrapped gift between $1 and $5 that is age and gender neutral. The eighth graders will read a Christmas book and pick a “password” that is said often in the book. Every time that word is said in the story, students will pass the present they are holding to the person next to them. Whatever present the student is holding when the book is finished is the student’s to open.

Merry Christmas!

Madeleine Cookie Contest Winners Announced

tasting

The Madeleine Christmas Cookie Contest was a success and raised over $1,000, which will be added to the auction proceeds benefitting the school. Not only did Father Mike, Father Anthony, and Mrs. Steele get to happily nibble cookies, but folks at the bake sale eagerly snapped up bags of cookies.

In case you missed it, Ellie W. won in the kids category. She's a student at Alameda and will be making her First Communion at the Madeleine this spring.

Evelyn C. won in the adults category. She's a Madeleine seventh grader who was volunteering at the food bank last night and didn't find out until this morning.

Father Mike, Father Anthony, and Mrs. Steele felt the judging was difficult because, without exception, all of the cookies were delicious AND they had so many to try.

Also check out this submission, which included Father Mike, dog Maddie, Maria Manzo, Michael Kissinger (with clarinet) and their pup in front of the church!

Jogathon Leaders

Picture a sunny day on the Field of Dreams . . . picture Madeleine students getting great exercise as they raise money for their school . . . picture yourself and a friend making it all possible! This could be you if you step forward to be a Jogathon Leader.

Our fearless leaders for the past several years, Kelsi Charlesworth and Shelby Walker, will be graduating from the Jogathon as their daughters graduate from The Madeleine.

So, the 2018 Jogathon will be their last. This means that you have the opportunity to learn from the best this year before you step up as a Jogathon Leader in 2019.

Sound interesting? How about a little bit of sugar to sweeten the deal? Our new Jogathon Leaders will be exempt from having to work a volunteer job at the 2018 Auction!

Contact Caryn Fiedler at cfiedler@themadeleine.edu with questions and expressions of interest.

safetyParents Must Enter School to Pick Up Students

Please remember that when you come to school in the middle of the day to pick your child for a doctor appointment, you must come into the school to pick him or her up. You can NOT simply call the front desk from your car and say that you are outside. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping your children safe.

Rube Goldberg Machines & Skipped Science Tests

Can you build a working Rube Goldberg Device with at least four steps that rings a bell at the end? Our eighth-graders can. Six teams competed for the chance to skip an upcoming science test. The winning device (themed “Chaos”) lasted 19 seconds and was built by Cameron, Jude and Will. Congrats to the "Chaos" team!

Here are some of the Rube Goldberg machines. Look closely for key components that keep the machine running, like dominoes, tubes and the bells at the end.

doorSt. Stephen's Lunches

Making a difference, one lunch at a time!

This week the fifth grade brought in 95 lunches. Thank you to the families who were able to provide this week.

Lately, I have been asked - "where is St. Stephen’s Episcopal Parish?" Well, it is not the parish on the south side, but is located downtown on the corner of SW 13th and Clay Avenue near the on-ramp to Hwy 26. St. Michael’s is still running their outreach programs at this parish so we are providing lunches for numerous outreach programs. It is a very vibrant and active community that we have paired with, and they are so appreciative of all our efforts.

Calling All Basketball Uniforms & Sweatshirts recycle

Has your child outgrown (or is no longer needing) their basketball uniform or their basketball sweatshirt with their name on it? Please bring these items to the Madeleine Uniform Closet as soon as possible.

Sweatshirts with names on them will be repurposed with new names on them! That's right, a NEW name can be put on those outgrown sweatshirts so they can be passed on to a smaller child.

Let's be models of change and do our part for the planet by reusing and repurposing our old uniforms!

If you would like a repurposed sweatshirt, please contact Deborah Naugler.

deborahnaugler@hotmail.com or via telephone 503-713-3068

Thank you for helping our planet and world.

starsYDP is Hiring

Our before and after school program, better known as YDP, is needing some additional help. In order to be in compliance with our licensing agency, we must have a certain number of adults on duty to meet the student/teacher ratios. This year we are serving many children, especially in the afternoon, and we need to hire some additional personnel. We have placed a few ads, but no luck in recruiting appropriate hires.

"Word of mouth” advertising is the best, so we need some help in getting the word out. The Madeleine kids are great to work with, the pay is competitive, and the schedule follows the school calendar. So this means there are long Christmas, Spring, and Summer breaks. So if you know of someone who would like to work a few hours a day, a few days a week, please, please, please ask him/her to give me a call. Think high-schoolers over 18, part-time college students, nannies, retirees who want to get out of the house for a few hours. Perhaps this job is of interest to you? No stress, just lots of fun.

mirrorWomenStrength Self-Defense Classes

January 3, 10, 17 from 6pm - 9pm @ The Madeleine

Open to ages 13 and above, although those 13-16 need to be accompanied by a female adult.

Registration opens on Tuesday, December 5th at 9am.

Register at www.portlandoregon.gov/police/womenstrength or at 503-823-0260.

Click here to see the flyer with complete details.

It is important that registrants attend the entirety of all three training sessions because empowerment is taught based self-defense. This is a holistic approach that includes more than just physical fighting skills. Assertiveness, using your intuition, definitions of sexual assault and domestic violence -- just to name a few -- are all taught.

Audio/Video Ministry needs your help!

We are putting together a team of ministers to assist in running the video screens and sound system during our weekend liturgies. This is a very important ministry, as both sound and screens help to enhance our worship experience.

Both ministries make use of technology, so comfort with an iPad for the sound levels and presentation software on a laptop computer for the video screens are very helpful. (Similar to Powerpoint—you run the presentations that have been built for each Mass, and will not need to edit or create them.)

Interested? Please contact Rich Hammons, rhammons@themadeleine.edu.

Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!
