January 19, 2018

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Every year we set aside a week to celebrate the gift of Catholic education. This year Catholic Schools Week (CSW) will be January 28 to February 2. We will start the week with a special Mass on Sunday at 10:00. All students are invited to wear their uniform to Mass and process in with their classmates behind their class banner. We will also have a children’s choir that will join the adult choir for the Mass.

This choir has also been practicing for our student liturgy, which will be on Tuesday, January 30 at 9:00am. The reason for the change from our normal Thursday liturgy is that the Archbishop wanted to come to The Madeleine to celebrate Mass with us during CSW. We are quite honored to have Archbishop Sample with us. It will be a day the children will remember, that is for sure. Parents are most welcome to join us on the special day. I hope you might be able to rearrange your schedule so that you can attend the Mass, hear our special choir, and greet the Archbishop with Madeleine hospitality!

Additional details for events during Catholic Schools Week will be published in next week’s Footnotes.

Have a great weekend.

                                                               Sincerely,

                                                                Susan

Favorite Things Partysignup

Saturday, January 27 @ 6pm

“Brown paper packages tied up with string....these are a few of my favorite things.” Come hungry because there will be plenty of food, wine (everyone’s favorite), fun and mingling with other Madeleine moms on a cold winter’s night. Bring a ”favorite” thing you wouldn’t want to live without ($25 limit) in a brown paper package to exchange. There will be no dog bites, no bee stings, no feeling sad because we all will walk away with new favorite things. Come on, we all know there are better things than raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens!

Hosted by Lindsie Campbell, Noel Larson & Susan O'Leary

rememberIn-Parish Tuition Reminder

Dear Parents,
If you are receiving In-Parish Tuition, don't forget that you agreed to serve in a Parish Ministry as part of your Parish Affiliation Commitment. Good news! There are a couple ways coming up to help fulfill this commitment:

We need a wide range of help at these events, including food prep, kitchen help, serving, busing and clean-up.

These events are in addition to our Wine Tasting, Parish Picnic and Madeleine Marketplace events which have already passed for this year.

Have you fulfilled your commitment? If yes, thank you! If not, please contact Janeen Reilly in the parish office, at 503-281-5777 or jreilly@themadeleine.edu to say you can help at one of these events. Both are in need of volunteers and Janeen would really appreciate your help.

Thank you, Father Mike and Susan Steele

penniesStart Saving Your Coins for Pennies for the Poor

January 29

Student Government is hosting our annual Pennies for the Poor campaign during Catholic Schools Week. Once again the money we raise will benefit St. Andre Bessette, formerly known as the Downtown Chapel. St. Andre Bessette has an outreach program that provides food and support for the marginalized in our community.

The fundraiser is during Catholic Schools Week, which begins on Monday, January 29, and wraps up on Thursday, February 1. During those days, students can bring in money to fill up their class’ jugs. Pennies and dollars are worth positive points and all silver coins are worth negative points. Whichever class has the most points in the end wins!

Did You Hear About Hot Lunch?trio

Our Hot Lunch Program will resume on February 5th! We have hired Trio Hospitality to prepare and serve the lunch meal four days a week. Our Parents Club Thursday lunch will continue until the end of the school year.

Trio currently serves a number of Catholic schools around Portland and their principals spoke very highly of the food and service that Trio provides. A few of the highlights that this company offers:

The company will be on campus January 26th at 8:30am with a sampling of their food and to answer any questions you may have. Please stop by for a taste. We will let you know when we have finished all the paperwork and you can order your February meals.

jogathon

Be a Jogathon Leader & Skip All Other Volunteer Hours

Our fearless Jogathon leaders for the past several years, Kelsi Charlesworth and Shelby Walker, will be graduating from the Jogathon as their daughters graduate from The Madeleine.

So, the 2018 Jogathon will be their last. This means that you have the opportunity to learn from the best this year before you step up as a Jogathon Leader in 2019.

Sound interesting? How about a little bit of sugar to sweeten the deal? Our new Jogathon Leaders will be exempt from having to work a volunteer job at the 2018 Auction!

lunchesSt. Stephen's Lunch Program

Making a difference, one lunch at a time!

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” Well the 3rd and 2nd grades have answered. Last week Mrs. Myers’ 3rd graders brought in 282 lunches and this week Mrs. Witka’s 2nd graders brought in 392! This brings our January total to 674 lunches.

MLK Day of Service is an opportunity to re-commit ourselves as citizens by volunteering in service to one another. It is also a time to consider how much work still remains to fulfill Dr. King’s dream. Service is a powerful tool for strengthening our communities and the 3rd and 2nd graders did such a tremendous job and made such a difference. Thank You!

The 31st Annual M.U.S.E. Band Winter Concerts provide a great opportunity to support your child’s classmates who will be performing in a large ensemble with students from neighboring schools while also sneaking in a little culture. Also, the concerts provide a great chance to see if your child might want to join M.U.S.E. next year.

starsYDP is Hiring

Our before and after school program, better known as YDP, is needing some additional help. In order to be in compliance with our licensing agency, we must have a certain number of adults on duty to meet the student/teacher ratios. This year we are serving many children, especially in the afternoon, and we need to hire some additional personnel. We have placed a few ads, but no luck in recruiting appropriate hires.

"Word of mouth” advertising is the best, so we need some help in getting the word out. The Madeleine kids are great to work with, the pay is competitive, and the schedule follows the school calendar. So this means there are long Christmas, Spring, and Summer breaks. So if you know of someone who would like to work a few hours a day, a few days a week, please, please, please ask him/her to give me a call. Think high-schoolers over 18, part-time college students, nannies, retirees who want to get out of the house for a few hours. Perhaps this job is of interest to you? No stress, just lots of fun.

Audio/Video Ministry needs your help!

We are putting together a team of ministers to assist in running the video screens and sound system during our weekend liturgies. This is a very important ministry, as both sound and screens help to enhance our worship experience.

Both ministries make use of technology, so comfort with an iPad for the sound levels and presentation software on a laptop computer for the video screens are very helpful. (Similar to Powerpoint—you run the presentations that have been built for each Mass, and will not need to edit or create them.)

Interested? Please contact Rich Hammons, rhammons@themadeleine.edu.

Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!
