T-Shirt Survey Due March 25!

The 2018 Jogathon is scheduled for May 11, and we are gearing up to kick-off this fun, annual event following Spring Break. In the meantime, the Jogathon Chairs are asking parents to complete a brief survey in order to select their child’s shirt size. T-shirts will be worn on event day. You must complete the survey in order to receive a shirt. We will not be choosing a size for your child. A separate survey must be completed for each child. Please complete the survey by Sunday, March 25.

development2018 Annual Fund Campaign Kicks Off

If we raise $40,000, we get $40,000!

After you rip open the report card envelope, be sure to check out the other envelope coming home today in your child’s Friday Folder. (Letters are in the mail to 7th and 8th grade families, so they don't end up at the bottom of your middle schooler’s backpack).

A quick glance at the letter will lead you to believe it is simply an appeal for the 2018 Annual Fund Campaign. A moment of reflection, however, might lead you to realize it is an opportunity to help families you see every day at Madeleine.

Whether you choose to support the Area of Greatest Need, Tuition Assistance or the Endowment, your donation will help the families around you who struggle to pay tuition. So far this school year, students at The Madeleine School have received almost $60,000 in financial aid.

Give what you can and know you have answered the call to help those in need. If we raise $40,000, the Joseph E. Weston Public Foundation will match it with another $40,000! So without further ado, grab your letter and make a difference in the lives of those around you every day!

artGreetings from the Art Room!

Madeleine artists have been busy this winter with each grade level exploring a variety of materials, techniques and types of art. We learned about the talented Henri Matisse with each class creating a piece of art in a style reminiscent of this prolific artist...some classes created paper cutouts, others experimented with painting in the style of the Fauves, and some took inspiration from Matisse's contour line drawings and portraits. This spring we will study more artists of the 20th century....artists like Paul Klee, Piet Mondrian and Alexander Calder.

In addition to our artist studies, we continue to study the "Elements of Art" and "Principles of Design." In the fall we focused on Color, Line and Shape and are now adding the Elements of Texture, Value, Shape and Form, as well as some Principles of Design focusing on Balance, Contrast, Pattern and Unity.

On a final note, we look forward to the Madeleine Art Show, which will be held on May 17. Weekly postings for volunteer projects to help with show preparation will begin in April. If you'd like to volunteer, there will be opportunities to help mount artwork prior to the show, as well as help display and hang artwork the week of the show.

Have a Happy Spring Break everyone!
Mrs. Groves

BottleDrop Comes to The Madeleinebottles

BottleDrop is a relatively new system for redeeming bottles and cans in Oregon. The Madeleine School has registered with the program, and the proceeds will benefit the 8th grade by providing funds for their Ashland trip. One of the best things about this program is that it can support not only the class of 2018, but future classes as well.

Participating is super easy! Click here to learn how.

Not sure what to toss in your blue BottleDrop Bag? We have answers!

As of January 1, 2018, additional beverages are now included in Oregon’s Bottle Bill and have a refund value of 10 cents per container, regardless of what is written on the label. Manufacturers have until January 1, 2019, to include the 10-cent refund value on containers for the new beverages.

Most beverages in bottles and cans that are sold in sealed glass, metal, and plastic sizes from 4 ounces up to 1.5 liters are included. Some of the common beverages that have a 10-cent refund value are: Coffee/Tea ~ Kombucha ~ Energy and Sports Drinks ~ Hard Cider ~ Juice ~ Soda (3 liters or less in size) ~ Beer ~ Water (3 liters or less in size)

Beverages that are NOT included: Wine/Distilled Spirits ~ Milk (dairy and plant-based) ~ Infant Formula ~ Meal-Replacement Drinks

St. Stephen's Lunch Programlunches

Making a difference, one lunch at a time!

Mrs. Myers’ class did an amazing job this week. They brought in 189 lunches. Thank you third grade -- you all made a big difference in people’s lives!

With our weekly numbers being so strong, our lunches also help Operation Nightwatch. Each Tuesday evening St. Stephens opens their doors for a few hours, offering a warm and safe place for the homeless that were unable to get into shelters for the evening to have a bite to eat, watch movies, play games and have conversation. The homeless population also suffers from social isolation, and Operation Nightwatch is a program that reaches out to our friends and offers a nurturing relationship.

Priorities for Strengthening School Security

After meeting with representatives of the Parish Safety & Security Committee, Father Mike has asked for prompt action on several high priority security improvements for the Madeleine School.

A review of the school’s security camera system is underway, led by James Wurzer, parish business manager, with technical assistance from Stuart Brown, a school parent. They are discussing upgrades and expansion of the system with the vendor, as well as improvements in computers that monitor the cameras.

Another priority is improving lighting around the school. Previously the Irvington neighborhood had objected to school lighting along NE 23rd Avenue. James and Stuart suggest approaching the neighbors again with a modified design that may be more acceptable, for example, lighting along the ground.

Two other priorities are to review small alarm buttons that teachers could wear and use to instantly call for assistance or alert others in case of an emergency or major security threat. And Father Mike said the other high priority is to improve the physical security of the school, including the option of installing bulletproof glass at the front entrance and main doors of the school.

Father Mike also emphasized that while physical security improvements are needed, and he said he fully supports them, the most important immediate need is for everyone – parents, teachers, staff, students, all parishioners – to be observant and alert, and to respect and follow the security procedures already in place.

Even as new security measures are being introduced, Father Mike said, it is important to keep in mind that Madeleine School already has very good security, especially relative to other schools, and he is committed to making it even better.

If anyone has questions or interest in the safety and security efforts at the Madeleine, please contact Marc Gonzales at gonzalesmarc5@gmail.com.

Audio/Video Ministry needs your help!

screenWe are putting together a team of ministers to assist in running the video screens and sound system during our weekend liturgies. This is a very important ministry, as both sound and screens help to enhance our worship experience.

Both ministries make use of technology, so comfort with an iPad for the sound levels and presentation software on a laptop computer for the video screens are very helpful. (Similar to Powerpoint—you run the presentations that have been built for each Mass, and will not need to edit or create them.)

Interested? Please contact Rich Hammons, rhammons@themadeleine.edu.

Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!
