March 16, 2018

A Note from Susan

Susan has turned over her column this week for a very important message from the School Advisory Committee.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Each year the School Advisory Council (SAC) recommends a budget to Father Mike and the Pastoral Council for the upcoming year. Foremost in our consideration is continuing to provide an excellent Catholic education to the extended community, not just to those families who can comfortably afford it. Because the cost of educating our kids is greater than tuition cost, we also thank you for your generosity during the fundraising opportunities throughout the year. The budgeting process attempts to balance many factors such as: actual and anticipated changes in costs, the revenues needed to balance them, and the long term financial health of The Madeleine School.

Our Three-Year Plan has financial goals that include maintaining a fiscally sound budget and offering a competitive tuition rate to all families. The finance committee evaluated many factors, including tuition at other Archdiocese schools, faculty salary rates, and revenue sources. As in past years, some costs have increased, including higher utility, benefit, and healthcare costs. To offset these cost increases and propose a balanced budget, the School will need additional revenues.

After careful consideration of the items above, SAC recommended a tuition increase that is consistent with the goals in the Three-Year Plan, provides the funds necessary to meet important needs, and keeps tuition costs at The Madeleine competitive relative to peer schools in the area. SAC’s recommendation was approved by the Pastoral Finance Committee, the Pastoral Council, and ultimately adopted by Father Mike.

Thank you,
Tim Resch, School Advisory Council Chair
Lucas Newman, SAC Finance Committee Chair

BottleDrop Comes to The Madeleinebottles

BottleDrop is a relatively new system for redeeming bottles and cans in Oregon. The Madeleine School has registered with the program, and the proceeds will benefit the 8th grade by providing funds for their Ashland trip. One of the best things about this program is that it can support not only the class of 2018, but future classes as well.

Participating is super easy! Click here to learn how.

St. Stephen's Lunch Programlunches

Making a difference, one lunch at a time!

This week the 4th grade brought in 109 lunches bringing our yearly total to 5,310! Way to go Bulldogs!

Last week our students had a special guest. Rev. Dr. Paul Davis, who is the Minister for Outreach at St. Stephen’s Parish, came to thank all of our students for participating in our lunch program and show them what a difference our lunch program makes for people experiencing poverty and homelessness.

students

In his weekly online newsletter, he highlighted his visit to The Madeleine and the efforts we make each week to help those who are hungry and in need. Here's what he wrote along with some photos from his visit:

Since 2015, students at The Madeleine School have been making an average of 175-200 sack lunches every week during the school year for us to share with our friends at the Table who are hungry! Every sack contains a sandwich, piece of fruit, chips, and a sweet for dessert!

Last school year, Madeleine's 265 students made us 8,060 sack lunches; so far this year, they've brought us another 5,600 to share!!

We owe our great partnership with Madeleine students to another one of our great partners, St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, and their Social Services Coordinator, Denise Smith, who connected us when St. Michael's joined us to add lunch at the Table on Mondays & Fridays!

Last Monday, students saw some of our videos made by OES students and heard about volunteering from Madeleine student Helena, who joined us to share Saturday Breakfast last year! We hope to have more students - and the 5th Grade class - joining us this semester!!

Security Update

The Madeleine Safety and Security Committee has been hard at work and provided Father Mike with a variety of recommendations this week.

Thank you to Molly Briscoe, Stuart Brown, Marc Brune, Donna Prosser and Tess Strand for stepping up and joining the committee as its newest members.

And, thank you to everyone for your increased vigilance and understanding as we all work through new procedures to keep our school, church and entire campus safe from threats both natural and man-made.
