February 1, 2018

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Another Catholic Schools Week (CSW) comes to a close! It is such a special week of activities, reflections, and gratitude for what we sometimes take for granted.

Our Sunday Mass was so well attended, and our school choir sounded great. Archbishop Sample’s Tuesday visit for Mass with the students was an extra blessing. He had so many complimentary comments regarding the students’ Mass theme, their participation, the choir and singing, fifth grade’s preparation, and how lovely the school and grounds looked. The classes composed the most beautiful prayers and created eye-catching bulletin boards to support the CSW theme of Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed. Thank you to the Parents Club for the thoughtful staff gifts on Monday and for the delicious lunch today. This week certainly reminds me of how precious the gift of Catholic education is to our kids, families, parish, community, and country.

Hot Lunch

Speaking of delicious lunches…..Don’t forget to order February hot lunch for your child. The process for ordering is the same as before. Our new kitchen staff uses Boonli (www.boonli.com) to post menus and accept orders and payment. If you have never ordered lunches before, or need a refresher, click here to find the directions. Remember you can order up until the day before. There is no two week window for ordering as before.

Field Trips, Jogathon & Called to Protect

Another reminder……Spring field trips will be starting and the Jogathon is coming up fast, so if you want to chaperone or tally, you must be up to date in the Called to Protect program. If you volunteered last year, you need to view the yearly online video (which changes each year.) If you are new to the school and/or have never volunteered before, you need to do a background check, attend a Called to Protect training in person, and sign off on a Standards of Conduct document. Click here for details and don’t hesitate to call the office for clarification.

No School on Friday

Hope you enjoy your day off tomorrow. The faculty will be at St. Pius X for an Archdiocesan Faith Formation Day. We will hear a speaker from Catholic Relief Services, focusing on Catholic social teaching, and have Mass with Archbishop Sample and teachers from all over the Archdiocese. The best part is that I live one mile from St. Pius, so no morning traffic(!), and I get to sleep in a bit. Great way to start the weekend.

                                                               Sincerely,

                                                                Susan

St. Stephen's Lunch Program

Making a difference, one lunch at a time!

Drum roll please! 833 lunches this week!!! Can you believe it?! Well, Mrs. Steele is very impressed by the largest single week turnout yet, and you should be as well.

Thanks to your immense generosity, lunches were distributed to St. Michael’s Chili Tuesday, First Christian Church (who just recently began a sandwich ministry), HOMEpdx, Operation NightWatch, nearby subsidized housing at Hamilton West and Rose Schnitzer Tower, SAFES West Shelter for Women and Children, and Grace Bible Church. Whew! That's a lot of people who were able to eat on Tuesday thanks to the lunches you made!

While our parent volunteers (Tiffany and Reid Cooper) were delivering the lunches, a woman pulled them aside and said, “We love your children. They are the absolute best to think of us each week, and we so look forward to Tuesday. God Bless You.”

Already in the first five months of this school year, we have made and donated more than 4,600 lunches. We are well on our way to meet (or surpass!) last year's total of 8,060 lunches!

prepareSpring is Coming . . . and that means Field Trips and Jogathon . . . and Called to Protect

What do field trips and the Jogathon have in common? They are both fun volunteer opportunities and both require that you complete Called to Protect. You heard us right – you can’t chaperone a field trip or help with the Jogathon unless you are current with the Called to Protect requirements.

Common Comments

Luckily for you, there are easy answers to all these questions. Click here for details on what you need to do. If you still have questions, call Angela Rosebrook at 503-288-9197. She is the Called to Protect guru who can tell you exactly what you need to do.

So, get going now before all the fun volunteer opportunities fill up with other people who have already completed Called to Protect.

rememberIn-Parish Tuition Reminder

Dear Parents,
If you are receiving In-Parish Tuition, don't forget that you agreed to serve in a Parish Ministry as part of your Parish Affiliation Commitment. Good news! There are a couple ways coming up to help fulfill this commitment:

We need a wide range of help at these events, including food prep, kitchen help, serving, busing and clean-up.

These events are in addition to our Wine Tasting, Parish Picnic and Madeleine Marketplace events which have already passed for this year.

Have you fulfilled your commitment? If yes, thank you! If not, please contact Janeen Reilly in the parish office, at 503-281-5777 or jreilly@themadeleine.edu to say you can help at one of these events. Both are in need of volunteers and Janeen would really appreciate your help.

Thank you, Father Mike and Susan Steele

jobYDP is Hiring

Our before and after school program, better known as YDP, is needing some additional help. In order to be in compliance with our licensing agency, we must have a certain number of adults on duty to meet the student/teacher ratios. This year we are serving many children, especially in the afternoon, and we need to hire some additional personnel. We have placed a few ads, but no luck in recruiting appropriate hires.

"Word of mouth” advertising is the best, so we need some help in getting the word out. The Madeleine kids are great to work with, the pay is competitive, and the schedule follows the school calendar. So this means there are long Christmas, Spring, and Summer breaks. So if you know of someone who would like to work a few hours a day, a few days a week, please, please, please ask him/her to give me a call. Think high-schoolers over 18, part-time college students, nannies, retirees who want to get out of the house for a few hours. Perhaps this job is of interest to you? No stress, just lots of fun.

Audio/Video Ministry needs your help!

We are putting together a team of ministers to assist in running the video screens and sound system during our weekend liturgies. This is a very important ministry, as both sound and screens help to enhance our worship experience.

Both ministries make use of technology, so comfort with an iPad for the sound levels and presentation software on a laptop computer for the video screens are very helpful. (Similar to Powerpoint—you run the presentations that have been built for each Mass, and will not need to edit or create them.)

Interested? Please contact Rich Hammons, rhammons@themadeleine.edu.

Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!
