A Note from Susan
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I am so happy to announce that the principal search committee has finished their work and selected a new principal for The Madeleine School. Father Mike asked me to share the good news that our very own Kate Chambers will be taking on the job. Kate is an excellent choice for many reasons, including her commitment to Catholic education, her experience as a classroom teacher, her leadership in integrating technology into the curriculum, and her student management skills. She is a collaborative faculty member, who shares her gifts with everyone. I have worked closely with Kate since she joined our faculty in 2006. With twelve years of Madeleine experience and knowledge, I anticipate a very seamless transition when I retire. Please join Father Mike and me in celebrating Kate’s decision to take on the responsibilities, which can be both joyful and challenging, of Catholic school administration. Yeah, Kate!
Blessings,
Susan

Winning Cursive Handwriting
Ines S. has been named Oregon’s Third Grade Winner for private schools in Zaner Bloser’s National Handwriting Contest!
Now in its 28th year, the Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting Contest gives students the chance to showcase and receive recognition for their handwriting skills in manuscript or cursive. Contest judges use the Zaner-Bloser “Keys to Legibility: Size, Shape, Spacing and Slant” to evaluate the entries. Students in our third, fourth and fifth grades competed with cursive handwriting.
Ines will compete in the national competition, vying with other state winners in the same grade at both public and private schools to earn the title of National Grade-Level Semifinalist or Grand National Champion.
Congrats Ines and good luck on the national competition!

Grandparents and Honored Guests Day
Online RSVP is Open, Volunteer Help Needed
Mark your calendars for Thursday, May 23rd from 12:45 to 3:00 for this annual event.
We kindly request attendance by grandparents or a student's honored guest, which may include someone close to them such as an aunt, favorite neighbor or former nanny, etc. Parents may volunteer to help with the event or may attend Mass with their child if they would like to be part of this day as well.
If your child does not have someone in this role to attend this event, not to worry. Your child's teacher will make sure all are included in the activities that day.
PLEASE NOTE: the fifth and sixth grade class will not be at school for the event due to the Oaks Park Safety Patrol Field trip. This date was beyond our control. These students may be back in time for mass if grandparents are attending with siblings in other grades.
Register Your Guests
Thank you very much for the RSVP as it greatly helps with the planning. If you have two sets of grandparents attending, please fill out a separate form for different households. Please RSVP by May 15, 2019. Thank you! RSVP this year through this link.
Volunteer
We are asking for help in two hour shifts. Feel free to sign up for more than one shift. Requests are listed on the school volunteer site. All volunteering can count towards this year's hours. Thank you!

Art Show - New Format this Year
May 23rd, 6:00 pm, Parish Hall
One of my goals for your children in art this year was that they begin to think of themselves as constantly developing artists. Art brings so much richness to our lives, but in order to appreciate it, we need to free ourselves from thinking of ourselves as good or not good at art--- both ways of thinking leave little room for growth or change. A major goal for art class is that every student becomes comfortable evaluating his or her own work and making observations for strength and improvement.
With that in mind, I am changing the format of the art show this year, so that STUDENTS are choosing the pieces that they want to display as well as creating an artist statement highlighting their goals for art-making this year and beyond. I think that this will lead to greater ownership and interest regarding the show; each student might pick a different combination of pieces to show!
Volunteer Help Needed
To that end, I am looking for art show volunteers during class time to help younger students choose their favorite three pieces and prepare it properly. I also need hands to set up the event and take down work after the event and file it away.
You can find the sign up for the ART SHOW with times that I need help here: www.themadeleine.edu/hours
Thank you so much for your kindness, your support, and your delightful children!
Mrs. Parmeter
P.S. Please remember that for the classroom volunteers you need to have completed your Called to Protect training.
Counselor's Corner
Language Matters
My heartbeat quickened when I saw the 70 percent off advertisement, because I have had my eye on an enameled cast iron pan for quite a while. After going right to the website, I was disappointed to find that the item I have been wanting was not discounted enough for me to afford it. Confused, I looked back at the ad. That is when I saw it . . . the words Up to . . . Ugh! When I initially read it, all that registered in my brain was 70 percent off.
Many of you are shaking your heads, thinking it was obvious from the beginning. And some of you would have internalized the words the same way I did.
The same thing happens with kids. It is why we are so careful when choosing our words. Although 98 percent of our students will hear the whole directive when we say, “Please don’t run in the halls,” 2 percent will hear “run in the halls” and think it is a great idea because they’ll get where they are going much faster.
If we want everyone to hear the message clearly and correctly, we will phrase things in such a way that if they attend only to the end, they will still be successful.
- Don’t sit by your friends. Find a successful spot.
- Don’t walk around. Stay in one place.
-
Get started without wasting time. Get started right away.
-
Don’t talk to your friends. Read quietly the whole time.
-
Don’t quit. Build stamina.
- Don’t pay attention to distractions. Ignore distractions.
Tune in to your written and verbal language this week. See if there are phrases you can tweak so that kids, no matter how they hear you, will understand and perform the expectation with accuracy and independence.

St. Stephen's Lunches
Thank you 1st Grade!
The 1st graders put us back in the 200 zone and sent in 240 lunches! Also, a big thank you to families who donated extra items from their pantries to help fill emergency food boxes to help nourish families when they are waiting for that next paycheck.
Representatives at St. Stephen's are again appealing to The Madeleine to help support Easter weekend. They are in need of at least 300 lunches for next week to help them get through the holiday and to help feed the hungry. If your family would like to help the Kindergarten class out, please do!
Thank you for all your help, it really does make a difference one sandwich at a time.
