A Note from Susan
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Were you disappointed that we didn’t get a ton of snow this week? It certainly was the talk of the Principals Retreat last week, along with many other spiritual topics! There are just some things that are out of our hands and the weather is one of them. Though I would have liked another unexpected day at home, I am glad we do not have days to make up for those extra snow days like we did a few years ago.
Open House Events
Because of the anticipated inclement weather, we had to reschedule our Open House activities to next week. We will greet prospective parents on Tuesday, February 19th at 7:00 pm and the school will be open for tours on Wednesday, Feb. 20th between 10 and 1. I believe we are in need of volunteers for these two events because of the rescheduling. Julie Baldwin is in charge of getting help, so if you are free please contact her by text at 503-490- 7731 or email at julie.juliebaldwin@gmail.com.
Science Night
Another volunteer opportunity is coming up on February 28th to support our annual Science Night. Each year Ms. Yuhas orchestrates a great evening of science activities, demonstrations, and FUN. The entire student body is invited to come and participate. It can be a bit chaotic, so we need a few parents to monitor doors so that everyone is safe, and the building is secure. I try to limit the shifts to 30 minutes so that parents can enjoy the evening, too. Please give me a call or email if you can commit to a 30 minute shift between 6:30 to 8:00.
I hope you have plans for a relaxing four day weekend. The faculty will be gathering at Holy Redeemer on Tuesday to build upon our Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) in the morning and then back to school in the afternoon to work on curriculum maps or anything that needs our attention!
Blessings,
Susan

Spreading Messages of Kindness into the Community
Have you have seen one of these eye catching cupids around the neighborhood? The Madeleine 4th and 5th graders decorated these charming cupids last week and each one held a special message of kindness. The 5th grade students were encouraged to find a spot in our community to place their cupid where the message would resonate with others. Some of the sites that were chosen... coffee shops, grocery stores, local playgrounds, the dog park, the courthouse, Jesuit High School, Randall Children's Hospital, Postal Annex, Pioneer Courthouse Square, Union Station, the Apple Store, the library, the post office, Union Gospel Mission, and The Max. A shopper at Whole Foods was so inspired by the message, he donated a $50 gift card to the 5th grade class to "Help Feed the Hungry." The class worked together and decided to donate it to Maddie's Cart in their mission to feed Portland's homeless. Where have you seen one?
Way to go all of you that helped spread some kindness and cheer and encouraged others to pay it forward! Thank you also to Kris Thompson and Jen Tadjedin who organized this project and helped place cupids in the community.
Check out @Madeleinecupids on Facebook too!

Books Hitting the Big Screen in 2019
For this week’s article, I decided to marry my two worlds: books and media. Here is a link to a list of books that are being released as movies this year. What am I most excited about? The first one on the list. I read this YA book a few years ago and have strong, vivid visualizations STILL to this day. The book is in our school library, so encourage your middle schooler to check it out. Happy reading and happy watching!
St. Francis Dining Hall Mug Drive
February 25 to March 1
During this time of year, it is important we remember those living on the streets without adequate shelter and warmth. The week of February 25, Student Government is hosting a mug drive for the St. Francis Dining Hall. St. Francis Dining Hall serves hot meals to those in need in our community, and they are in need of more mugs. Please donate your used or unused mugs to the boxes located in each of the classrooms. We appreciate your support.
Operation Gratitude
Learning Loft Requests Your Help
Our third grade writing group is doing a letter writing campaign for Operation Gratitude. The students have invited the whole school to write letters to first responders. These letters will be included in care packages that are sent out to police, firefighters and paramedics. On the Operation Gratitude Wish List are some items that we thought maybe people might want to bring in for the care packages: wipes (30 count), gum, hand warmers, lip balm, playing cards, puzzle books, sewing kits, black crew socks. There will be a box outside the learning loft if anyone wants to donate.
We are trying to collect everything by Feb. 21st. Thank you!
St. Stephens' Lunch Program
Thank You 7th Grade
Mr. Parker’s 7th Grade class brought in 140 lunches this week. Thank you 7th Grade! Also, a big thank you for all the families who are donating mustard and mayonnaise packets. If you would like to donate the unused packets in your kitchen drawer at home, please just put the packets in a Ziploc bag, and we will make sure they go to the right place.
Next week we are not delivering lunches, so 6th Grade is next up on February 26th.
Happy President’s Day!

Counselor's Corner
Recommendation from Mrs. Ullman
Hello, Madeleine Community: Two of my favorite professionals are collaborating on a workshop in the "neighborhood" and it should be a day well-spent if working with teens is a subject that interests you. Additionally, Howard will be presenting with his colleagues in May on a topic that highlights his true expertise: Healthy Masculinity. Let me know if you have any questions about these workshops or professionals. Thanks.
Carolyn Ullman, School Counselor
Helping Teens
On February 22 Howard Hiton will be teaming up with Yshai Boussi LPC, to offer a workshop at the McMenamins Kennedy School entitled, "Helping Teens: blending compassion and effectiveness with a population that may or may not want our help." We will discuss methods for engaging teens in therapy, consider the impact of technology on adolescents, look at harm reduction strategies to address teen drug use, and much more. You can register through Yshai's website. Here is a flyer with more details.
Healthy Masculinities
Then on May 11, along with his long time collaborators, Peter Mortola and Stephen Grant, Howard will share in a full day conversation entitled Promoting Healthy Masculinities: A Workshop for Parents and Professionals at the Catlin Gabel School. During that day he will explore three of the most vexing issues for those working with or parenting boys: guiding boys to develop healthy sexuality, teaching boys to own and manage their aggression, and assisting boys to form healthier relationships with devices. Stay tuned for more details and registration information.

These will be used in STEAM activities and creative adventures in both spaces. You can drop off your extra LEGOS to the school library. If Mrs. Chambers or Mrs. Krebs isn't there, please leave a note so we know who donated, and we can thank you!
