March 8, 2019
A Note from Susan
Dear Parents and Guardians,
There are two very important deadlines coming up. And, they involve free money!
The first deadline is Sunday, March 31 (yes, during spring break). This is the deadline to apply for financial aid for the 2019/20 school year. I know that sometimes even $1,000 can make all the difference in the world, so please don’t hesitate to apply.
Applications are processed by FACTS Tuition Aid, and allocations are determined by the number of people applying and the available pool of money. You can still apply after March 31, but the pool of funds available will be smaller.
Click here to apply for the 2019-2020 school year
The second deadline is Friday, April 5. This is the deadline to apply for the Laskowski Family Tuition Assistance Scholarship, which was created during the 2010 Paddle Raise.
This $1,000 scholarship is in addition to any financial aid you may receive from The Archdiocese of Portland Tuition Assistance Fund and/or The Madeleine School Tuition Assistance Fund. Please submit your application to the front office of the school.

Don’t make life any harder than it needs to be. If a little extra money for tuition will take some stress out of your life, please take a few minutes to take advantage of these two opportunities. If you have any questions about applying for either financial aid or the Laskowski Scholarship, please do not hesitate to give me a call.
Have a great weekend!
Susan

News from the Art Room
Madeleine students have sailed through the figure drawing unit and are developing some really good habits of observation! Grades 2 through 8th grade are practicing the "ball and tube" method of proportion drawing, which is pretty silly looking but works well to help artists keep human figures in proportion. Just for fun, the younger grades took a sojourn into Keith Haring's work, which always feels perfectly suited for the bright colors and themes of Valentine's and Mardi Gras.
Despite snow putting a wrench in Black History month plans, we are celebrating Black artists and will continue doing so throughout the spring; looking at Jacob Lawrence, William H Johnson, Elizabeth Catlett, and comic book artist Billy Graham, without whom we would have no Black Panther.
Looking forward, I am on the lookout for parents who might want to share their ORIGAMI or WEAVING skills. Are you good at these things? Please contact me!

All You Need to Know About Parental Controls
Common Sense Media published a resource last week that I have been waiting for for a long time. I was excited to find Parents’ Ultimate Guide to Parental Controls. This article is written in question and answer format with up-to-date information on phones, internet, and some specific apps. In the section on blocked websites, they mention turning on SafeSearch in your child’s Google account. I want to be sure to communicate to you that when your child is on their school account at home and at school, SafeSearch is turned on at all times for all students. One more thing I want to point out is towards the end of the resource is a link to a page about tips for talking to your child about the need for parental controls. I hope you find this resource as helpful as I have as a parent (and educator).

St. Stephens Lunches
Nice Job, 5th Grade!
Thank you to the 5th Grade for contributing 225 lunches this week! Many were decorated with Shamrocks and kind words - these thoughtful touches were noticed and appreciated.
A gentle reminder to not put condiments on the sandwiches. St. Stephen volunteers asked specifically for this change. Eggs are on the “Big 8” of food allergens. Many lunches were not being accepted because of mayonnaise on the bread.
If you have any of individual packets of either mayonnaise or mustard you would like to donate, we will happily accept them.
Next week is 4th Grade's turn!
Is Madeleine leaving $7,000 a year on the table?!?
Thanks to Amazon, Madeleine could earn this much more free money a year. In the past three years we have earned an average of $1,000/year.
All you have to do is click on the Amazon button on the front page of the Madeleine home page each time before you place items in your shopping cart and make your purchase. (Amazon won't let you save the site as your home page).
To make those clicks even more meaningful, we will allocate ALL of our Amazon revenues to upgrading the Field of Dreams. The Field has been loved too much and needs repairing soon. The greater our Amazon dollars, the greater our help towards upgrading the field.
Thank you for your support!!

Hello, Madeleine Community:

Healthy Masculinities
Then on May 11, along with his long time collaborators, Peter Mortola and Stephen Grant, Howard will share in a full day conversation entitled Promoting Healthy Masculinities: A Workshop for Parents and Professionals at the Catlin Gabel School. During that day he will explore three of the most vexing issues for those working with or parenting boys: guiding boys to develop healthy sexuality, teaching boys to own and manage their aggression, and assisting boys to form healthier relationships with devices.
