A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Every year we set aside a week to celebrate the gift of Catholic education. This year Catholic Schools Week (CSW) will be January 27 to February 1. We will start the week with a special Mass on Sunday at 10:00. All students are invited to wear their uniform to Mass and process in with their classmates behind their class banner. We will also have a children’s choir that will join the adult choir for the Mass. Additional details for events during Catholic Schools Week will be published in next week’s Footnotes.

The National Catholic Education Association has launched a new project to help keep Catholic schools alive and affordable across the country. During Catholic Schools Week, on January 29th, participating schools will join an online giving campaign: Many Gifts, One Nation: A Day of Giving to Catholic Schools. The purpose of this initiative is to work together to promote the faith-filled and academically excellent education we all have at the core of our shared mission of Catholic education. Please read the blurb below that tells you how to support The Madeleine on this day of giving.

Have a great three day weekend.

Susan

Save the Date: January 29 & 30

Support The Madeleine School—your donations will be doubled!

As part of Catholic Schools week, the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) is sponsoring “Many Gifts, One Nation: A Day of Giving to Catholic Schools,” a day dedicated dedicated to giving to Catholic school education.

Between noon on January 29 and noon on January 30, you are invited to support Madeleine School students with the gift of a Catholic school education.

100% of your gift (less a small transaction fee) will support The Madeleine School Tuition Assistance and Endowment Funds, both of which help keep Catholic education affordable for Madeleine students and their families. Best of all, your donation will be matched by the Joseph E. Weston Public Fund. Every dollar you give turns into $2!

Don’t forget to let others know that you participated. Share on your social media networks and challenge your former classmates, friends and family to give as well! Remember—Many Gifts, One Nation will only be available for 24 hours.

Stay tuned for more details as the Day of Giving approaches!

How (and when) to Limit Kids' Tech Use

That’s the title of a resource I came across this week from The New York Times. It starts with three general tips on the topic of kids and technology then breaks it down by age groups. You can read the article in its entirety or jump to your age group with the links at the top of the screen. Some suggestions you could put into action right now or save for when your child is at that stage. I really think this one is definitely worth the time reading and giving thought to.

St. Stephens' Lunch Programss

Way to Go 1st Grade!

Once again the 1st Grade brought in an amazing number of lunches, this time a whopping 287! Many lunches included messages of hope and bright and cheerful images. These contributions to the hungry are so appreciated.

We will be collecting lunches next Tuesday, after Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, and the Kindergarten class is scheduled to bring in those lunches.

Spring is Coming... and that means Field Trips and Jogathon ...and Called to Protect

What do field trips and the Jogathon have in common? They are both fun volunteer opportunities and both require that you complete Called to Protect. You heard us right – you can’t chaperone a field trip or help with the Jogathon unless you are current with the Called to Protect requirements.

Common Comments

Luckily for you, there are easy answers to all these questions. Click here for details on what you need to do. If you still have questions, call Angela Rosebrook at 503-288-9197. She is the Called to Protect guru who can tell you exactly what you need to do.

So, get going now before all the fun volunteer opportunities fill up with other people who have already completed Called to Protect.

Girls on the Run

Registration OPEN! Grades 3-5

This spring, The Madeleine School is hosting a Girls on the Run team. Girls on the Run is a positive youth development program for girls in 3rd-5th grade. Twice per week for 10 weeks, girls will have fun, make friends, increase their physical activity levels and learn important life skills. Trained coaches lead girls through interactive lessons and running activities.

The team will meet at Madeleine on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4pm to 5:30pm starting March 5 and run until May 23. Over the course of the ten-week program, girls in 3rd-5th grade develop essential skills to help them navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness. The program culminates with girls positively impacting their communities through a service project and being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5K event.

Family Fun Community Service Project

Saturday, February 9cw

Dunetchka Otero-Serrano and Community Warehouse would like to invite the Madeleine Community - Parents and Kids - to participate in a FUN two-hour volunteer project on Saturday, February 9th from 10a-12p. See details below and sign up here. Please email mich@communitywarehouse.org names of all participants so they have accurate information for any kids involved as well.

Details:

Parents and kids! Come make colorful, warm, and cozy fleece throw blankets for the families who come to Community Warehouse. Community Warehouse will supply all of the materials necessary to make No-Sew Fleece Throw Blankets for clients who are moving into their new homes. What a wonderful and comforting accessory to have as clients settle into their new home. Imagine family nights on the couch wrapped in a comforting blanket. Parents and kids will work in teams of 2 to create a unique blanket for Community Warehouse to distribute to clients. Here is an example of how we will create the blankets together: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTL6bEz8y5c

Community Warehouse provides essential furnishings and household items to clients who are moving into permanent housing. Most of the items we distribute are in gently-used condition. The blankets we create together will be a brand new treat, made with love and care by our volunteers. 50% of the clients we serve are kids under 18, and we hope the volunteers on this project will appreciate the very special and unique blanket they will create for a kid moving into their new home.
