Spring is Coming... and that means Field Trips and Jogathon ...and Called to Protect
What do field trips and the Jogathon have in common? They are both fun volunteer opportunities and both require that you complete Called to Protect. You heard us right – you can’t chaperone a field trip or help with the Jogathon unless you are current with the Called to Protect requirements.
Common Comments
- “But, I don’t remember if I’m current.”
- “I don’t remember what web site has the video I need to watch.”
- “Which video am I supposed to watch?”
- “This is my first year at Madeleine. What do I need to do first?”
Luckily for you, there are easy answers to all these questions. Click here for details on what you need to do. If you still have questions, call Angela Rosebrook at 503-288-9197. She is the Called to Protect guru who can tell you exactly what you need to do.
So, get going now before all the fun volunteer opportunities fill up with other people who have already completed Called to Protect.

Living in a World of Advertising
I decided to devote this week’s corner to a continuation of the conversation from my 7th and 8th grade classes this week, but the topic goes all the way down to kindergarten. The lesson this week was called Selling Out and it focused on living in a world where advertising is all around us. As one man in the video we watched said, the only time to not see ads is when you are sleeping. The classes were all very interested and engaged in the idea of advertising and we talked about both sides: being the consumer as well as being the business. We also had really good conversations about the ethics of advertising to children. I leave you with this interesting article that explores ideas for having a conversation with your child about commercials, billboards, ads, etc.

Girls on the Run
Registration OPEN! Grades 3-5
This spring, The Madeleine School is hosting a Girls on the Run team. Girls on the Run is a positive youth development program for girls in 3rd-5th grade. Twice per week for 10 weeks, girls will have fun, make friends, increase their physical activity levels and learn important life skills. Trained coaches lead girls through interactive lessons and running activities.
The team will meet at Madeleine on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4pm to 5:30pm starting March 5 and run until May 23. Over the course of the ten-week program, girls in 3rd-5th grade develop essential skills to help them navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness. The program culminates with girls positively impacting their communities through a service project and being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5K event.
