March 15, 2019

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I am sure you are looking forward to Spring Break as much as our teachers and staff. Even if it is just a “staycation” in Portland, it will be great to slow the pace down for a week. I was writing our Week’s Preview last night for the faculty and was feeling overwhelmed with all the activities coming up next week….Heifer Project, field trips to OMSI and Franz Bakery, St. Patrick’s Day Parade, 7th and 8th Grade Living Stations of the Cross, St. Stephens lunches, School Advisory Council, end of the 2nd trimester, report cards, hosting Region 3 Principals Meeting, and Parents Club meeting, plus any classroom events that are not on the office calendar. I am exhausted in anticipation!

Seriously though, all these experiences are the things that your children will remember when they reminisce about their days at The Madeleine. Yes, their strong, rigorous academic curriculum will serve them well as they make their way in the world, but it is the field trips, religious activities, service projects, etc. that they will remember. Hang in there—one more week.

Blessings,
Susan

Heifer Driveheif

March 18-22

Student Government is pleased to announce that the week of March 18-22 is Heifer Project Week! Please participate by donating to earn a pin every day of the week. Each day has a theme:

The proceeds will go to Heifer International, an organization that supplies families in impoverished communities with livestock. At the end of the week, the grand total of the money raised will be divided among the classes, and each class will be able to choose the animal(s) that they want to donate.

Remember: bring in change to make a change!

Grandparents and Honored Guests Day

Mark your calendars for Thursday, May 23rd for this annual event. Please note, this year the date follows on the Thursday after First Communion. The event will run from 12:45 to 3:00 that day.

We kindly request attendance by grandparents or a student's honored guest, which may include someone close to them such as an aunt, favorite neighbor or former nanny, etc. Parents may volunteer to help with the event or may attend Mass with their child if they would like to be part of this day as well.

If your child does not have someone in this role to attend this event, not to worry. Your child's teacher will make sure all are included in the activities that day.

More details and an invitation to follow in upcoming Footnotes and Friday Folders.

under%20construction%20clipartConstruction Update

The scaffolding company is erecting scaffolding along the south side of the building today, in preparation for removal of stained glass windows from the old church. They will make a pathway (a tunnel) along the sidewalk, for parents who are dropping off or picking up, please go around the front of the church on 24th, rather than cutting through between the buildings, while the scaffolding is in place.

The scaffolding will be in place until mid April.

News from the Art Room

Guest Speaker and Donation Request

Third graders had a special guest speaker on Wednesday---- our own Felix A., all the way from 6th grade. Felix shared some tips about making comics interesting, which included different types of panel views. 2nd-4th graders will be finishing up their comics before spring break so prepare to be cracked up!

When we come back after break, some classes will be starting weaving projects, so I am eagerly accepting donations of yarn. What I can most use are bright colors or color-transition yarn, but I will accept anything that you are kind enough to send me. This is a great use of those small amounts of yarn left over from larger projects; the kind where you don't have enough to make anything- we can do something with that!

Happy Almost Spring!

4th Grade Fills the Need!

Mrs. Langhus’ 4th Grade class made 192 lunches this week! Sacks were decorated and filled with so many special treats to accompany their sandwiches. Such thoughtfulness and mindfulness to each lunch truly symbolizes Madeleine’s commitment to the hungry.  Finally, a big thanks to Anne Palmer. Did you know she brings in lunches each week too? The secret is out….Thank You!

Week before Spring Break belongs to our 3rd Grade Class!

Refugee Family Update

Thank you for all of your support of the Ullah family. Our Refugee Ministry members have been seeing the Ullahs on a weekly basis—practicing driving with Said in preparation for his driving test, sewing with Solimah, and just visiting together. Said has a steady job at a factory. Sumaiyah is thriving in first grade. Solimah has joined a Rohingya women’s group and plans to start taking English classes at PCC. As our work with the Ullahs is winding down, the Refugee Ministry is considering starting to work with a second refugee family through Catholic Charities. If you’re interested in joining the ministry, please contact Amanda Gray at amandaegray@gmail.com or Catherine Glavan at catherine_geary@hotmail.com.

Solimah is a wonderfully detailed seamstress...you may have seen her work at this winter’s Madeleine Marketplace bazaar. If you have a serger, fabric or notions that you would like to donate, or if you’d like to commission Solimah to make something for you (...vintage fabric into kitchen towels, an unfinished project that she can finish for you, etc.) please contact Deborah Naugler at deborahnaugler@hotmail.com.

Is Madeleine leaving $7,000 a year on the table?!?

Thanks to Amazon, Madeleine could earn this much more free money a year. In the past three years we have earned an average of $1,000/year.

amazon

All you have to do is click on the Amazon button on the front page of the Madeleine home page each time before you place items in your shopping cart and make your purchase. (Amazon won't let you save the site as your home page).

To make those clicks even more meaningful, we will allocate ALL of our Amazon revenues to upgrading the Field of Dreams.  The Field has been loved too much and needs repairing soon. The greater our Amazon dollars, the greater our help towards upgrading the field.

Thank you for your support!!
