December 14, 2018

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I hope you enjoyed last night’s Christmas program. It is always one of the highlights of the school year. The students, under the wonderful direction of Mr. Pederson, certainly put us in the Christmas spirit. The Junior Choir gave a marvelous performance, too. And can you believe that our Beginning Band was ready to perform after only 5 weeks of practice ??? Many thanks to Dr. Manzo for accompanying the singing so that Cary could concentrate on the performance. Kudos to everyone involved.

All-School St. Stephens Lunches on December 18

This Tuesday our 3rd grade is in charge of St. Stephens lunches. However, we are inviting all students/families to bring 5 extra lunches to help them over the Christmas break. As you may remember, we did this at Thanksgiving and set a record of 1004 (!) lunches. We are hoping that we can help tide them over until we return in January. So if you can put a few lunches together for next Tuesday, St. Stephens would be so grateful.

New AfterSchool Class Starts in January

We have just heard that we will be able to offer an afterschool chess class. The survey we sent out a few weeks ago indicated that we have enough student interest to make it a go. Details will be coming out in early January and the program will start later in the month. The coding classes will also continue. Look for that information after Christmas break.

Sock Drive Ends December 19

I am assuming that your weekend plans will include a little Christmas shopping. Just a reminder that the third grade is doing a sock drive for Ronald McDonald House. If you can pick up a pair or two for this good cause, please drop them off before Wednesday. Thanks so much from the 3rd grade.
Have a great weekend.

Sincerely,

Susan

Best. Book Fair. Ever.bf1

Thank You Madeleine Community!

Our recent Book Fair is the best one yet for our school with $5,132 in sales! Thank you to all who bought books for your children, gifts for others, and classroom wishlist books. These sales do have a major impact on our library. We earned $2,694 in credit from Scholastic to purchase new books and supplies for the library. This is our primary source of funds to obtain new books in our library, which is so important to keep our students interested in reading. Look for new books coming in the new year. We are so grateful for your support!

The $2 Free Dress on 11/30 and donations to the gift wrap and hot chocolate boxes during Madeleine Marketplace earned $452 which was used to purchase books for Children’s Book Bank. They were thrilled to receive 91 new books to add to the book bags they give to children who may not otherwise have their own books at home. bf

A huge thank you to our new Book Fair Chairpeople, Jenny Curtis and Melanie DeBellis, and all the volunteers, parents and students, who gave their time to make this event so successful!

presentPresent Pass

Tuesday, December 18

In the spirit of giving this Christmas season, Student Government is organizing the annual Present Pass. This is a fun Friendship Family activity where every student gives and receives a gift. Each student needs to bring in a wrapped gift that is in the $2 to $5 range. This gift needs to be gender neutral and appropriate for any age K-8. Please send your student to school with their gift for the activity on or before Tuesday, December 18. Thank you for your participation in this enjoyable Christmas themed activity.

St. Stephens' Lunch Programss

All Classes - Request for Lunches

Our sack lunch program is amazingly successful this year, and Mrs. Langus’s 4th Grade class did an awesome job sending in 196 lunches this week. Go Bulldogs!

Our friends at St. Stephens asked if The Madeleine families could help them once again during the Christmas holidays. Two weeks ago, Mrs. Steele asked families to respond if they were interested in participating in another ALL SCHOOL lunch drive on Tuesday, December 18th, and we heard back a resounding YES!

So, next week in conjunction with the third grade class, we are ALL making lunches to help folks in need, and to help fill the gap during the holiday break. So please participate! Also, it would be great if you could:

  1. Write how many lunches are in the bag.
  2. What type of sandwich you made
  3. Remember, no condiments

Merry Christmas!

News from the Art Room

Print making is well underway, with most 5th-8th graders finishing carving their blocks and starting to actually pull prints! During this process, I am having them save everything for self-evaluation later, so students are making 5, 10, even 15 prints in a variety of ink and paper colors. In January, students will compile a portfolio of best prints, but in the meantime, please come check out our "hall of wonder" near the commons. (As an aside to parents, a print-making set is a really good present for Christmas! They contain everything you need to make a print--- a brayer, a speedy cut block, a cutting tool, 4 blades and ink. They are about $18 and easy to find at art stores.)

Merry Christmas!

Mrs. Chambers' Tech Corner

Body Movement After Tech

If you peek in at the end of many of my tech classes, you will see the students moving their bodies either by stretching or doing a GoNoodle dance. The students and I frequently brainstorm the importance of moving our bodies after we have been at a computer OR tablet OR phone for an extended period of time. A stretch that all grades have practiced and are familiar with is simply clasping your hands together behind your back and looking up. In 3rd grade the other day, there was an audible AHHHHH after doing this stretch together. Modeling any type of movement at home after watching a movie together or being on the computer or phone for a while will help reinforce the need for movement in our bodies that the students have been practicing.

I have some resources to share with you! While they do incorporate technology, they help kids move their bodies.

Sock Drive! All Sizes Needed

Now through December 19th

The 3rd grade class is partnering with the Ronald McDonald House to collect brand new socks of all sizes (infant-adult). These socks will be part of the welcome package that families receive when they check into RMH. The third grade students will be also be attaching a small note to each pair of socks. There are bright green donation boxes located inside the doors of the school and church to drop your socks.

Making Giving Joyful

We recognize that the many appeals during this time of year can be a challenge for each family trying its best to be as generous as possible during the holidays.

The Christmas season, however, proves to be a popular time for giving. We are grateful if you choose to support The Madeleine School during this holiday season!

Any gifts received during the holiday season, will be matched by the Joseph E. Weston Public Foundation and count toward our $55,000 Annual Fund goal!

For those driven by the holiday spirit to give at the end of the year, please visit The Madeleine School Giving Page at www.themadeleine.edu/schoolgiving.

Our best to you for a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

FORMED—An Advent Preparation Resource

The Madeleine has purchased access to a website called “FORMED,” where you can find a wealth of information on our Catholic faith. Content is family-oriented with many programs designed especially for children. FORMED is offering short daily videos by Dr. Tim Gray to enrich your Advent preparations. Reflections for children are also available from Brother Francis to get the whole family spiritually prepped for Christmas. A simple registration is all that is required to automatically bring both reflection programs to you. Register at https://formed.org/promo/advent-reflections-registration. Check the selection that you have a FORMED account through the parish. No access code is required to receive these daily reflections, however, now would be a great time to register to take advantage of all FORMED offerings throughout the year. Sign up today at formed.org by using the Parish Access Code: QKX7TK. Access to FORMED is also available on the go by downloading the app on iTunes or Google Play Store. Questions: Darlene Maurer, dmaurer@themadeleine.edu.
