March 1, 2019

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Next week we will begin our Lenten season on Ash Wednesday, March 6. I am one of those “cradle Catholics” who remembers as a child giving up candy and movies during these 40 days. It was definitely hard, but it seemed that the candy in our Easter baskets tasted so much sweeter due to the self-imposed abstinence. I am way past the age that is still required for fasting during Lent, but I still try to find something to give up as a Lenten reminder. Starbucks stock is probably going to take a tumble as I forgo my beloved mochas until Holy Saturday. Our school community will celebrate Mass at 1:30 on Wednesday (no Mass on Thursday). There is also an early morning Mass at 7:30 and one in the evening at 6:00. Ashes will also be distributed.

Mardi Gras

Don’t forget our big Mardi Gras party next Tuesday before Lent begins. This annual celebration features delicious Cajun food and beverages, a Dixieland band, and lots of games and prizes for the kids in the gym KidsZone. Mark your calendars for this event and find details below.

Howard Hedinger

On a sadder note……One of our beloved benefactors, Howard Hedinger passed away a few weeks ago. He was a regular attendee at our annual auction and so generous to the many school causes over the years. His favorite way to support the auction was to offer a matching challenge to the various paddle raises for almost ten years. He was certainly instrumental in raising funds for the Commons make-over, remodeled bathrooms, the STEAM fund, the art room expansion, the kitchen upgrade, the Old Church Project, and the technology fund to name a few. Click here to read more about Howard and his life. His funeral will be open to all on March the 10th here at The Madeleine at 1:30 with a reception following at the Portland Art Museum. May he rest in peace.

Blessings,

Susan

Science Night 2019 Recap

What a great demonstration of hard work and creativity shown by our Middle School students and oustanding science teacher, Ms. Yuhas. There were many informative displays and fun activities...coding Spheros, slime making, egg drop competition, catapulting candy corns, what color is the dress, and the Yanny or Laurel phenomenon...plus so many more!

Ms. Yuhas shared, "The middle school kids worked very hard and did an  outstanding job!" Thank you also to Ms. Yuhas for leading this fun, interactive and educational night for our kids and their parents.

A huge shout out as well to our two parents that stepped up to volunteer to help with security at the doors, Michelle Thor and Lucas Newman...Thank You!

celWhat's Cool about Our School?

$10,000 scholarship?!

During the fall, you may have read right past a small mention in Footnotes about the fact that Lands’ End was accepting applications for their Starboard Scholarship for 6 – 12 graders. Well, Celine, in seventh grade here at The Madeleine, decided to apply.

And guess what? She won a $10,000 scholarship! Hers was one of only seven scholarships awarded to eligible students in grades 6 – 12 in the U.S. or Canada who displayed exceptional leadership skills and showed a passion for learning and education.

In addition to Celine's $10,000 scholarship, The Madeleine School will receive $3,000 in the form of a $2,500 cash donation and a $500 Lands’ End gift card. Keep an eye out for this gift card at the auction!

According to Celine’s mom, Catherine, “Celine's win is a reflection of the teachers and staff at The Madeleine. The accomplishments on her transcripts are the results of her growth with amazing teachers year after year. Her letters of recommendation came from devoted mentors who know her well and . . . the topics of her essays-- including the leadership skills learned in the MP [Madeleine Peacemakers] program-- are totally and uniquely Madeleine. She has been shaped in the school's image and it stood out nationally.”

Congratulations, Celine!

rciTurning Madeleine's Oldest Trophies into Treasures for Others

Ever noticed the overflowing trophy case across from the wardrobe closet? It was bursting with trophies collected over the years. In the spirit of tidying up for our Open House, it was time to tackle the trophy case too. Some of the trophies we held here dated back to the '90s! We were lucky enough to find an organization that took our oldest trophies and kept them out of the landfill. These trophies went to ReClaim It! This is a nonprofit arts and reuse retail store that salvages materials from the waste stream ("the dump") - in partnership with Metro Transfer Station by Recology - for neighbors, artists, and DIYers to Reuse, Repair and Reimagine. They have a very interesting retail location close by if you want to check them out.

If you happen to be cleaning out old trophies at home you might give them a call to see if they are interested in having yours or there are two other organizations that were also interested in our old trophies: Schoolhouse Supplies and SCRAP.

Your child may or may not have taken an interest, but by now you know I am all about educating ourselves about what is out there. Here is the Parents’ Ultimate Guide to “Apex Legends” that Common Sense Media recently published.

Counselor's CornerUllman

Recommendation from Mrs. Ullman

Hello, Madeleine Community:

Howard Hiton will be presenting with his colleagues in May on a topic that highlights his true expertise: Healthy Masculinity. Let me know if you have any questions about these workshops or professionals. Thanks.

Carolyn Ullman, School Counselor

Healthy Masculinities

Then on May 11, along with his long time collaborators, Peter Mortola and Stephen Grant, Howard will share in a full day conversation entitled Promoting Healthy Masculinities: A Workshop for Parents and Professionals at the Catlin Gabel School. During that day he will explore three of the most vexing issues for those working with or parenting boys: guiding boys to develop healthy sexuality, teaching boys to own and manage their aggression, and assisting boys to form healthier relationships with devices. Stay tuned for more details and registration information.
