A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Another Catholic Schools Week is drawing to a close, and we have so many people to recognize for making it a great experience. Sunday Mass was well attended, and our Student Government leaders were so eloquent thanking our parishioners for their support. Thank you for the many expressions of appreciation on Staff Appreciation Day. Our wonderful Parents Club, under the leadership of Alisa Pyszka and with help from Ali McPhee, gifted the staff with gift cards and a delicious lunch. We also had an afternoon snack cart come around for a little “pick me up” that was quite popular. (More than one teacher thinks we should do it every day.) We had a Spelling Bee, did an all school lunch to support St. Stephens, gathered as Friendship Families for Wednesday’s rotation activities, and honored our parents with Thursday morning treats. Tomorrow the faculty is going to St. Pius for a faith formation day with Dr. Robert Wicks and Mass with Archbishop Sample.

Auction Chairs Announced!

Another event earlier this week was our annual 3rd grade auction meeting. We had a lively meeting with lots of great ideas surfacing. I am happy to announce that four parents stepped up to chair next year’s auction. Please give a round of applause to……Raena Mayhew, Lyndsay Presthofer, Stephanie Savage, and Todd Whalen. We also have almost all the sub-chair positions filled from both the 3rd grade and returning veterans. I would say that we are in good hands for the 2019 auction. Details to follow. Also, a heartfelt thank you to Cathy Bargovan and Kristen LaBarca for handling the hospitality for the meeting. It definitely fueled the creativity and responsiveness of the group!
Have a great weekend.

Blessings,
Susan

Thank You Madeleine!

On Tuesday-Wednesday, as part of Catholic Schools Week, The Madeleine School participated in “Many Gifts, One Nation: A Day of Giving to Catholic Schools.” This is our first year participating in this event, and we raised $1,180 in 24 hours. In our Archdiocese, The Madeleine School had the most donors of all participating schools. Thank you to all who gave on this day!

These gifts support The Madeleine School Tuition Assistance and Endowment Funds, both of which help keep Catholic education affordable for Madeleine students and their families. Best of all, these donations will be matched by the Joseph E. Weston Public Fund. Every dollar you gave turns into $2.

bag1St. Stephens' Lunch Program

All School Participation on SERVE day!

GO Bulldogs! 644...Can you believe it? We joined together and truly celebrated Catholic Schools Week in an awesome and meaningful way. Our collective effort was distributed among many organizations this week: St. Michael’s Chili Tuesday, HOMEpdx, Operation NightWatch, SAFES West shelter for Women and Children, and nearby subsidized housing at Hamilton West and Rose Schnitzer Tower. Finally, a special shout out to Emily Dalton who helped deliver the lunches this week. A huge thank you also to Tiffany and Reid Cooper who coordinate and deliver lunches each week on behalf of our school.

Online Catholic Resource for Families

In celebration of Catholic Schools Week, I am linking you to an online handout that you might find helpful for your family. The Catholic Social Teaching of the Church is interwoven daily in the lessons students encounter at school, at Mass, and out in the world. I have found that this resource breaks each teaching into kid-friendly language, theme, and image. Refer to or print at home if you find it useful. Happy Catholic Schools Week and Parent Appreciation Day!

Family Fun Community Service Project

Saturday, February 9cw

Dunetchka Otero-Serrano and Community Warehouse would like to invite the Madeleine Community - Parents and Kids - to participate in a FUN two-hour volunteer project on Saturday, February 9th from 10a-12p. See details below and sign up here. Please email mich@communitywarehouse.org names of all participants so they have accurate information for any kids involved as well.

Details:

Parents and kids! Come make colorful, warm, and cozy fleece throw blankets for the families who come to Community Warehouse. Community Warehouse will supply all of the materials necessary to make No-Sew Fleece Throw Blankets for clients who are moving into their new homes. What a wonderful and comforting accessory to have as clients settle into their new home. Imagine family nights on the couch wrapped in a comforting blanket. Parents and kids will work in teams of 2 to create a unique blanket for Community Warehouse to distribute to clients. Here is an example of how we will create the blankets together: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTL6bEz8y5c

Community Warehouse provides essential furnishings and household items to clients who are moving into permanent housing. Most of the items we distribute are in gently-used condition. The blankets we create together will be a brand new treat, made with love and care by our volunteers. 50% of the clients we serve are kids under 18, and we hope the volunteers on this project will appreciate the very special and unique blanket they will create for a kid moving into their new home.

Girls on the Run

Registration OPEN! Grades 3-5

This spring, The Madeleine School is hosting a Girls on the Run team. Girls on the Run is a positive youth development program for girls in 3rd-5th grade. Twice per week for 10 weeks, girls will have fun, make friends, increase their physical activity levels and learn important life skills. Trained coaches lead girls through interactive lessons and running activities.

The team will meet, starting from the Science lab, at Madeleine on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4pm to 5:30pm beginning March 5 and run until May 23. Over the course of the ten-week program, girls in 3rd-5th grade develop essential skills to help them navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness. The program culminates with girls positively impacting their communities through a service project and being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5K event.
