A Note from Susan
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Sunday is the beginning of Catholic Schools Week 2019, and we have lots of fun activities planned. There is a schedule of events in today’s Footnotes, but I would like to extend a special invitation to your family to attend the 10:00am Mass on Sunday, January 27th. This is the kick-off event and is central to why we have Catholic schools—to pass on the faith to the next generation and celebrate as a Eucharistic community. Students are asked to wear their uniforms so they are identified as Madeleine students. They will gather in the back of church and then process in behind their class banner with their classmates. Our Junior Choir will be providing music, and our Student Government leaders will address the parish congregation. I hope your family will be able to join us for Mass.
On another note…..Fourteen years is a long time, and yet the past 14 have gone by so quickly. When I started at The Madeleine in 2005 my oldest son was planning his wedding and the youngest was graduating from high school. Now all four kids are married, and we have 4 grandchildren and one more on the way. My husband and I have gone from being “empty nesters” to a house filled with adult children, spouses, grandchildren, 3 granddogs and a 15 acre vineyard to take care of. Life is pulling me in many directions and so I think it is time for me to step away from my job at The Madeleine and give my full attention to husband and family. I will be retiring at the end of this school year.
The Madeleine has been a great source of joy and gratification for me. I have been so fortunate to have great teachers, pastors, staff, students, and families to work with. From greeting the kids every morning/evening, to overseeing capital improvements, to accreditation visits, to lunchroom supervision, to observing inspired teaching, to helping new principals, to welcoming new families to the Madeleine community…I have loved every minute of it. Thank you for this incredible experience.
Our Archdiocesan Superintendent and the Department of Catholic Schools will be coordinating the search for a new principal in conjunction with Fr. Mike and our School Advisory Council. This will all be unfolding over the next few weeks, so stay tuned. Meanwhile I hope to see you on Sunday at 10:00am Mass to kick-off Catholic Schools Week!
Blessings,
Susan

Catholic Schools Week
January 27 - February 1
Madeleine is joining Catholic Schools all over the nation in celebration with the theme Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed. There are many fun activities going on all week long. From special lunches to a Friendship Family activity to a Pennies for the Poor competition to a Spelling Bee, there's a little something for everyone to enjoy!
Sunday: Parish Appreciation Day
Catholic Schools Week will kick-off with a procession of students in uniform behind their class banners at the beginning of the 10am Mass. A Student Government representative will also be speaking at all Masses. In addition, a children’s choir will join the adult singers.
Monday - LEARN: Faculty & Staff Appreciation Day
We are honoring our faculty and staff both at Monday morning assembly and with a special luncheon. We are ending the day with a Spelling Bee (Gr 4-8) and Jr. Bee Recognition (Gr 1-3) at 2:00 in the Parish Hall.
Tuesday - SERVE: Faith Appreciation Day
The whole school is participating in our weekly St. Stephen's Lunch collection. We are asking everyone to add a little something extra to the bag: a note, a sweet treat, special drawing on the bag. At noon begins the start of the "Day of Giving", more details listed below in Footnotes.
Wednesday - LEAD: Student Appreciation Day
Free dress, a treat, and an afternoon of fun with our Friendship Families. And take the night off...NO HOMEWORK! "Day of Giving" ends at noon.
Thursday - SUCCEED: Parent Appreciation Day
Coffee and donuts for parents in the Main Hallway, plus a token of appreciation from students to their parents. Mass at 2:00 led by 5th Grade.
Friday: No School
Teacher In-Service Day
All Week: Pennies for the Poor
Look for the jugs in the main hallway during Catholic Schools week. All money raised by the classes will go to the Church of St. Andre Bessette. Have fun!
Pennies for the Poor
During Catholic Schools Week, the Madeleine will be holding a fundraiser to support St. Andre Bessette, an organization that cares for and supports people living on the streets. This fundraiser is a friendly competition between grades where the goal is to raise as much as possible to help those in need. Here is how the competition works: each grade will have a milk jug outside the office to deposit money into. Pennies and paper bills are worth positive points, and silver coins are worth negative points. Thank you in advance for your participation!

Day of Giving Begins Tuesday (1/29) at Noon
Support The Madeleine School—your donations will be doubled!
During Catholic Schools Week, The Madeleine School is participating in “Many Gifts, One Nation: A Day of Giving to Catholic Schools.”
Between noon on January 29 and noon on January 30, you are invited to support Madeleine School students with the gift of a Catholic school education.
100% of your gift (less a small transaction fee) will support The Madeleine School Tuition Assistance and Endowment Funds, both of which help keep Catholic education affordable for Madeleine students and their families. Best of all, your donation will be matched by the Joseph E. Weston Public Fund. Every dollar you give turns into $2!
Don’t forget to let others know that you participated. Use social media to challenge friends and family to give as well! Remember—Many Gifts, One Nation will only be available for 24 hours.

St. Stephens' Lunch Program
Kinders Rock! ALL SCHOOL this week!
“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” Martin Luther King, Jr. asked his audience in Montgomery, Alabama in 1957. Our service program here at Madeleine has definitely answered and has given back again and again this school year. Our Kindergarten class spent Monday honoring MLK Jr. by contributing 213 sack lunches! We have sent St. Stephen’s a total of 5822 lunches thus far.
But the need is far from over, and with the government shutdown our friends at St. Stephen’s are seeing an upswing of folks in need. And next week is National Catholic Schools Week! So Tuesday, January 29, 2019, is an ALL SCHOOL ST. STEPHEN’S LUNCH DRIVE! Please consider hand decorating your bags – the person who receives it is reminded that someone was thinking about and praying for them. A little bit of hope goes along way! THANK YOU!!!

A Recommendation from Mrs. Ullman
Dear Families:
Many of us listen to various podcasts regularly and have podcast apps on our phone. I wanted to recommend the podcast: Dear Anxiety. It is co-hosted by Renee Jain, founder of GoZen. I am currently using GoZen in 4th, 6th, and 7th grade. It is a program that helps kids manage stress and build resilience. (Check out Episode #3; Transforming Anger for Parents)
Let me know what you think!

What a wonderful and comforting accessory to have as clients settle into their new home. Imagine family nights on the couch wrapped in a comforting blanket. Parents and kids will work in teams of 2 to create a unique blanket for Community Warehouse to distribute to clients. Here is an example of how we will create the blankets together: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTL6bEz8y5c
Community Warehouse provides essential furnishings and household items to clients who are moving into permanent housing. Most of the items we distribute are in gently-used condition. The blankets we create together will be a brand new treat, made with love and care by our volunteers. 50% of the clients we serve are kids under 18, and we hope the volunteers on this project will appreciate the very special and unique blanket they will create for a kid moving into their new home.

Girls on the Run
Registration OPEN! Grades 3-5
This spring, The Madeleine School is hosting a Girls on the Run team. Girls on the Run is a positive youth development program for girls in 3rd-5th grade. Twice per week for 10 weeks, girls will have fun, make friends, increase their physical activity levels and learn important life skills. Trained coaches lead girls through interactive lessons and running activities.
The team will meet, starting from the Science lab, at Madeleine on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4pm to 5:30pm beginning March 5 and run until May 23. Over the course of the ten-week program, girls in 3rd-5th grade develop essential skills to help them navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness. The program culminates with girls positively impacting their communities through a service project and being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5K event.
