A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Thank you, thank you, thank you to Heather, Jen, Susan and Mary and all the volunteers who made our annual auction, “Saturday Night Fever,” an unabashed success. From the silent auction, to the easel items, to the class projects, to the dance competition, to the live oral auction (have I missed anything?) there was so much to see, do, and bid on. Final numbers have not been released, but I know the paddle raise brought in over $26,000 for all the upgrades to our school building. This does not happen without the dedication and hours of work on the part of all the volunteers. So, once again, thank you for all you do for our kids.

Have a relaxing Veterans Day weekend.

Blessings,
Susan

Overall Auction Results

Saturday Night Fever, the 2018 Madeleine Auction, brought some groovy disco vibes back to the northwest with more than 275 auction guests and volunteers bringing both a spirit of community and a generous attitude to the evening.

Thank you to everyone who worked, attended, donated or prayed to make this evening so much fun. And a special thanks to our amazing auction chairs Heather Matteri, Mary Remuzzi, Susan Samuelson, Jen Tadjedin.

While the final numbers are still being tabulated, it’s safe to say that our auction guests were overwhelming in their generosity. Be sure to read upcoming editions of Friday Footnotes for the grand announcement of how much we raised for our kids.

Paddle Raise Results

$26,300 raised to help "Finish the Job"

Thanks to the generosity of 61 families, $26,300 in restricted funds was donated during the Paddle Raise to help “Finish the Job” and bring four important school projects closer to completion.

This year’s paddle raise proceeds will go toward closing the funding gap for four school improvements, including an upgraded fire suppression system, an emergency evacuation system, fully-rebuilt middle school restrooms and covered bicycle parking. Some of these projects have been on our paddle raise wish list for years, so we’re lucky to finally have our wishes fulfilled.

• PJs, Popcorn and Pizza (for grades K-5) on December 8

And the Winner Is...disco

Angela Rosebrook!

All of our Madeleine dancers did an outstanding job on the dance floor after the live auction with their instructors from Arthur Murray. However, one dancer came home with the first ever Madeleine mirror ball trophy...our own Angela Rosebrook!

Many thanks to all of our dancers and to the two sponsors of the dance contest: Samuels Yoelin Kantor LLP and Patrick J. Henry Homes.

Upcoming Clothing Drive to Help the Homeless

November 13-16

In the winter, have you ever had to walk around downtown without a coat? Freezing right? There are many people in our community who don’t have warm clothing to help them survive the harsh elements. Student Government will be having a clothing drive to support Maddie’s Cart, a service run by our Madeleine parishioners that provides for the homeless. This drive will be from November 13-16. Students will drop off clothing in boxes located in each of their classrooms. Thank you for working together to support the homeless in our community.

Here is a list of items needed:

What's Cool About Our School?

The 5th grade students made Veteran's Day wreaths for 17 homeless veterans who are recently no longer homeless in Kansas City. The veterans are newly established in tiny homes, and their new front doors will have our wreaths to welcome them home on Veterans Day. We reused old Madeleine uniforms to help us create these beautiful wreaths! A huge, special thank you to our 5th grade parents!

Here is the video highlighting this project:

Social Media Mini-Series: Instagram

Today’s tech focus is Instagram. This is the second installment in a mini-series all about social media. Instagram is SUPER popular with both kids and adults. Here is an article on the ins and outs of the app. If there is one thing, well actually two things, that I can highlight from the article they are: a new Instagram account defaults to public. You need manually go to settings and change to private. Also, the world of hashtags is wide open. Any Instagram user can search for anything. There is no way to filter or control this app. The article offers two PDF versions of tips and info at the top of the page for quick reference.

We Need You!

Thank you, wonderful Madeleine parishioners, for your support of Maddie’s Cart! The men, women and children living outside in our community are so grateful for your gifts of clothing, food, financial donations, and yourself!

As the weather is changing, coats, hoodies, blankets, sleeping bags, and tarps are needed now. And even though we are doing laundry for many of the people we are serving, ‘street clothing’ (clothing you would wear if you were living outside) continues to be a priority. (A list is available here: www.themadeleine.edu/maddiescart.)

Please join us if you can on Monday morning (we gather at 6:30am in the school’s kitchen) or Monday evening (5:30pm) to share clothing, food and a warm smile with the people in our community living outside.

The Madeleine Marketplace—call for vendors

Eight-foot long tables and 60” round tables are available, as is electricity. Please bring your own tablecloths and lights, if you like. Fee to participate is $60. You act as your own bank and take payment at your own risk. Wi-Fi is available. Food and drink will be available for purchase as well as kids’ movies, crafts, caroling and pictures with Santa.
If you are interested in participating and agree with the above terms, please make a check out to The Madeleine for $60. On the memo line please indicate the size table you would like and if you need electricity. Mail check to Susie Andersen at 3401 NE Couch St. Portland, OR 97232. Questions?
