A Note from Susan
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Susan has turned over her column this week for a very important message from the School Advisory Committee (SAC).
Tuition for the 2019-2020 school year… wait have I lost you already? Are you still here or skimming for numbers in this paragraph? If you must, follow the link below, but do come back to this sentence and read on. The reasoning behind these numbers explains what is happening at our school and our best responses to those trends.
According to the new Archdiocesan Strategic Plan, there is a long-range plan to move away from the in-parish/out-of-parish tuition dichotomy. Proponents want tuition to be a single rate, closer to actual cost, complemented by a more robust financial aid program. This would lift the odious requirement on priests to police church attendance. Parents/guardians who historically haven’t applied for financial aid may find that they qualify. To be clear, this is not the Archdiocese’s policy now, but it is the desired direction over the next 7 to 9 years.
The next overlay is the school’s commitment to its previous five-year plan and current three-year plan, which call for a just wage for teachers and an equitable tuition structure that (1) maintains a fiscally sound budget (2) ensures every parish child can attend the school (3) offers a competitive tuition rate and (4) provides tuition assistance. Madeleine teachers are paid a little over 95% of the average rates of the area school districts. It is our goal to continue to slowly increase teacher salaries over time while still meeting our other goals and commitments.
Finally, let’s take a closer look at what’s happening within The Madeleine. Reviewing expenses, there are the annual increases for COLA, health insurance, workers’ compensation, and utilities. Looking at the good news on the revenue side, the school is full for next year, and both fundraising and tuition assistance donations look robust.
Procedurally, SAC’s finance committee developed the proposed budget, SAC voted to approve it and send it to the Pastoral Council. That council reviewed the budget and voted to adopt it for the 2019-2020 school year. It is set. As you reflect on the work that SAC does, remember each spring SAC solicits applicants for three open slots on the council, including mine.

In the months of February and March student government has sponsored several charitable drives and events. Here are the numbers:
- Mug Drive for St. Francis dining hall: 113 mugs
- St. Patrick’s Day Free Dress for Catholic Relief Services: $469.93
- Heifer Drive: $302.82

Kids Kreations 2019
Deadline to Order... Wednesday, April 10
It’s spring at The Madeleine, which means it’s time for Kids Kreations cards! Kids Kreations cards feature artwork by our fabulous students and have been a mainstay at the school since 2005.
Each child creates an original piece of artwork, which is reproduced in color on high-quality notecards. A set of notecards includes 20 cards (5 1/2 x 4 1/4 inch) and envelopes for $27.50. The inside of the cards are blank so they are appropriate for any occasion. Your child will be credited for their artwork on the back of the card.
This year kindergarten through 4th grade students created a special portrait of their family or someone in their family using markers and colored pencils. Fifth through 8th grade students worked on linocuts, choosing subject matter to their liking.

St. Patricks Day Parade
O'Slaviks Highlighted by KGW
For many Madeleine families the neighborhood St. Patricks Day Parade is an annual tradition. Parishioners, Coach Steve and Mrs. Slavik (former Madeleine teacher) started this event 30 years ago. KGW highlighted this beloved event and these two wonderful people....The O'Slaviks!

Parking Lot Safety
Let’s work together to keep our kids safe in the parking lots.
During drop-off and pick-up, the south parking lot (near the playground) is designated for those driving through and dropping off their kids. If you are walking into the school, please park in the north parking lot (near the field).

Save the Date
Grandparents and Honored Guests Day
Mark your calendars for Thursday, May 23rd for this annual event. Please note, this year the date follows on the Thursday after First Communion. The event will run from 12:45 to 3:00 that day.
We kindly request attendance by grandparents or a student's honored guest, which may include someone close to them such as an aunt, favorite neighbor or former nanny, etc. Parents may volunteer to help with the event or may attend Mass with their child if they would like to be part of this day as well.
If your child does not have someone in this role to attend this event, not to worry. Your child's teacher will make sure all are included in the activities that day.

Financial Aid Applications for 2019-20 School Year Now Available
Deadline = March 31st
The investment you make in your child's education over the years is substantial. Everyone at The Madeleine firmly believes that a Catholic education should be accessible for all students and affordable for their families.
Please do not hesitate to apply for financial aid for the 2019/20 school year. Applications are processed by FACTS Tuition Aid, and allocations are determined by the number of people applying and the available pool of money. If you have any questions about this process, please do not hesitate to give Susan Steele a call.
Applications for financial aid are due March 31st. You can still apply after this date, but the pool of funds available will be smaller.

Apply Now for the Laskowski Family Tuition Assistance Scholarship
Deadline to apply: Friday, April 5
In November of 2010, The Madeleine School’s live auction Paddle Raise inspired donors to give $40,000 in honor of Pat and Kathy Laskowski. The Laskowskis sent five children to The Madeleine School between 1996 and 2011 and are current members of The St. Mary Magdalene Parish.
This $1,000 scholarship is in addition to any financial aid you may receive from The Archdiocese of Portland Tuition Assistance Fund and/or The Madeleine School Tuition Assistance Fund.
Please submit your application to the front office of the school. The deadline to apply is Friday, April 5. The scholarship recipient will be notified by May 3.

Podcasts for Kids
Spring Break starts today at 3:15! I might be as excited as the kids. During this week you may find your kids in some down time, whether that be hanging out at home, on a car ride to the beach, or on a plane ride to somewhere warm. I have two links for you to explore some podcasts: one for littles and one for the tweens & teens in your family. A family favorite of ours is Story Pirates.

St. Stephens Lunches
Thank you 3rd Grade!
Mrs. Myers’ class did an amazing job this week. They brought in 187 lunches. Thank you 3rd grade, you all made a big difference in people’s lives. With our weekly numbers being so strong our lunches also help Operation Nightwatch. Each Tuesday evening St. Stephens opens their doors for a few hours, offering a warm and safe place for the homeless who were unable to get into shelters for the evening to have a bite to eat, watch movies, play games and have conversation. The homeless population also suffers from social isolation, and Operation Nightwatch is a program that reaches out to our friends, and offers a nurturing relationship.

These programs create a supportive enviroment and help families prepare for the physical, emotional, and social changes that adolescents can expect to experience in the years to come.
The Mother-Daughter Program will be presented by mother-daughter team, Cathy Hansen and Janice Nelson, for girls ages 9-12 and their mother or guardian. The Father-Son Program will be presented by Dr. Bill Toffler, former Professor and Director of Education, Department of Family Medicine, OHSU for boys ages 10-13 and their father or guardian.
