November 16, 2018

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Two big holidays are looming right in front of us, and holidays usually involve FOOD. I want to direct your attention to our scrip program as a way of supporting our school by purchasing the food (you were going to buy anyway) with scrip gift cards.

We have scrip for most of the major grocery stores—New Seasons, Whole Foods, Fred Meyer/QFC, Safeway, Albertsons, Beaumont Market, Natural Grocers, and Thriftway. You can purchase holiday linens and decorations at stores such as Macys, Home Goods, Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel, Kohl’s, Target, and many more. Going to the movies over the vacation? Don’t forget to pick up Fandango or Regal Cinemas scrip for tickets. Another holiday tradition ---putting up the Christmas lights? Home Depot and Lowes have a great selection right now, and we have scrip for both stores. I could keep going, but I hope you get the picture. Click here for a complete list of scrip offerings. You can even skip the turkey and trimmings cooking extravaganza and get some scrip for pizza or a burger. Some of our scrip purchases need to be ordered by Tuesdays at 9:00 am for Friday pick-up, but many we have in stock all the time. Quantities may be limited next week, but plan now for Christmas.

Another holiday tradition involves online shopping on Black Friday. Please use the Madeleine link to our Amazon account which can be found on the Footnotes page, upper right hand corner. Click and then it will take you to another page where you can choose the school or parish Amazon account. (Pick the school account432x432 Happy Face Wink Clipart ) Then shop until you drop! If you have any friends and family who would be willing to use this portal when they shop Amazon, tell them to go to www.themadeleine.edu/amazon, then choose the school account, and shop, shop, shop. Remember that you must go through these steps each time you want to use Amazon. Your computer/Amazon account will not automatically donate 4% to The Madeleine unless you access Amazon using our portal.

Finally, again planning ahead, if you or someone you know, will be purchasing gift cards for their employees, the mailman, manicurist, favorite babysitter, yoga instructor, special barista, etc., please order from The Madeleine. For example, Starbucks gift cards are so popular during the holidays… order them here! For large quantities, let us know in advance so we can fill your order.

St. Stephens Needs Our Help

Speaking of large quantities…..St. Stephens has put in a special request for more sandwiches over the Thanksgiving holiday. Normally it would be 7th grade’s turn to make lunches on Tuesday 20th, but we are declaring an All School St. Stephens lunch. If everyone makes 5 lunches, we will meet their request. See the special plea below.

Since we will not be publishing a newsletter next week, please have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.

Blessings,
Susan

Auction Nets an Amazing $194,852

Thanks to everyone's hard work, the 2018 Madeleine School Auction grossed $245,150 and had a net of $194,852. This will be allocated with $168,552 (second highest ever!) toward the school's operating budget and $26,300 toward our paddle raise to “Finish the Job” on important improvements around the school.

The amazing allocation of $168,552 to the school's operating budget was made possible by your generous participation in the auction, excellent leadership from the auction chairs, subchairs who worked to keep their expenses as low as possible, a great selection of items new to the auction and stupendous support from our advertisers and sponsors.

Congratulations to everyone who worked so hard on the auction, especially auction chairs Heather Matteri, Mary Remuzzi, Susan Samuelson and Jen Tadjedin.

Paddle Raise Makes This Possible!

Make The Commons Less Common - 2017 Auction

The new music area rug arrived this past week and is a wonderful sight for anyone entering the music room. All the students have complimented on how much they like it. The rug is multi-functional, which can be utilized for both music classes and YDP. The kindergarten through third grade classes have already used the rug for learning basic note reading within a treble clef staff. Fourth grade and up are using it as a means to understanding Italian symbols within music. The symbols expressed throughout the rug are the most commonly used terminologies in music. The border outlines the keys of a piano. Many students are pretending to play the piano on the border while calling out the note names they recognize. This is particularly helpful for fourth grade, as we are just beginning to learn the notes of a piano. This music rug is a welcome and fresh addition to the new look of our music room. From all of us here at The Madeleine, thank you!

St. Stephen's Lunch Program

After a long weekend the 8th grade did a tremendous job and brought in 157 lunches, 75 extra sandwiches and many bags of Halloween candy! Thank you!

Next Tuesday we are asking that ALL CLASSES participate in bringing in lunches. Please have each student bring in at least 5 lunches. If you can make them festive with Thanksgiving decorations or turkey sandwiches all the better. Our friends at St. Stephen’s asked us for as many sack lunches as possible to bring out to folks living outside. Thank you in advance for making next week the best ALL SCHOOL service project for St. Stephen’s yet! Go Bulldogs!

The Gray Family Foundation Funds Outdoor School Grant Application

$4,650 received by The Madeleine School

In November 2016, Oregon became the first state in the country to fund a full week of Outdoor School for 5th or 6th grade students with the passage of Measure 99.

Unfortunately, due to a quirk in the law as it currently stands, Catholic School students are ineligible to access these funds to pay for Outdoor School. Luckily for us, the Gray Family Foundation recognizes this quirk and wants to make sure all Oregon students get to experience the adventure of Outdoor School.

As a school, we applied for and received a grant for $4,650 from the Gray Family Foundation to lessen the financial burden on our 6th grade families to pay for Outdoor School. This amounts to a cost reduction of $155 per student! Be on the lookout for future fundraising by the 6th grade class as they continue to strive to bring down their Outdoor School costs.

“Do what you can. If you can’t give money, give time or give your expertise. I think there is something everyone can contribute.” -John Gray

Social Media Mini-Series: You Tube

Continuing on the theme of social media, today I am highlighting YouTube.

YouTube is such a part of kids’ lives these days. It is so important to know how this site works and to know that you can put controls on your child’s account. I am again going to Common Sense Media for a resource they offer parents titled A Parent's Ultimate Guide to YouTube. I appreciate that they mention the app YouTube Kids. The name of the app sounds great and one would think that it would solve a parent’s worries, but media gets through that shouldn’t so it’s important to get to know that app as well.

Book Donations Welcome!

kids on booksIf you are cleaning out the bookshelves at home the library is interested in receiving your gently used books. If we are not able to use them in the library we will either donate them to a classroom, may try to sell them to Powell’s (and use funds for purchase for the library) or donate them to The Children's Book Bank. If you have books to donate, please bring them to the library and give them to Mrs. Chambers. Thank you!

FORMED—An Advent Preparation Resource

The Madeleine has purchased access to a website called “FORMED,” where you can find a wealth of information on our Catholic faith. Content is family-oriented with many programs designed especially for children. FORMED is offering short daily videos by Dr. Tim Gray to enrich your Advent preparations. Reflections for children are also available from Brother Francis to get the whole family spiritually prepped for Christmas. A simple registration is all that is required to automatically bring both reflection programs to you. Register at https://formed.org/promo/advent-reflections-registration. Check the selection that you have a FORMED account through the parish. No access code is required to receive these daily reflections, however, now would be a great time to register to take advantage of all FORMED offerings throughout the year. Sign up today at formed.org by using the Parish Access Code: QKX7TK. Access to FORMED is also available on the go by downloading the app on iTunes or Google Play Store. Questions: Darlene Maurer, dmaurer@themadeleine.edu.
