December 7, 2018

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

With the return of cold weather and the first hint of snow, it is timely to review what we do if a storm hits the Portland area. All you need to remember is that we follow Portland Public Schools in weather-related decisions.

If they cancel school, we cancel school. If they call a 2-hour delay, we have a 2-hour delay. Students should be here at 10:15. Our morning YDP before school program would start at 9:30, instead of 7:30. The only discrepancy to this involves our students who have Spanish at 7:30. Their class is cancelled for the day because the Spanish teachers are at other schools at 9:45.

If snow starts falling after students arrive and PPS closes school mid-day, we would also close mid-day. YDP would be cancelled. But don’t worry, we won’t send kids out into a blizzard! We will be here until everyone is picked up and safely home.

So now let it snow, let it snow, let it snow….. except, not on December 13, when we hope you can join us for our annual Christmas program! Details on attire, time, and location are in the blurb below.

Sincerely,

Susan

Annual Madeleine School Christmas Programkids

December 13 @ 7pm

Enjoy the classic sounds of Christmas with The Madeleine School Christmas Program on Thursday, December 13th at 7pm in the Church.

This beautiful advent program retells the story of Jesus Christ's birth through narration and song. Kindergarten through fifth grades will deliver their talents in joyous measure, as will the Children's Choir. This will also be the first time to hear The Madeleine Beginning Band perform. You won't want to miss this program. May the spirit of goodwill and peace resonate through each of us. Merry Christmas!

Be An Angel Among Us

Christmas Teacher Wish List

You can become a Christmas Angel by giving a gift from the "Teacher Wish List."  These items are not in the budget, but would enhance the classroom. Thanks to the many angels last year, donations to the teacher wish list provided hundreds of dollars in classroom extras!

cookie

And the winner is . . .

The morning of The Madeleine Marketplace, 21 eager bakers delivered their cookie masterpieces for the 2nd Annual Madeleine Cookie Competition. It was tough work, but Father Mike, Mrs. Steele, and Deacon Mike selected the winners.

Sloane B. won first place in the kids category, and won cookies for a year from Bluebird Bakers, a trophy, and a meet-and-greet with the Christmas Eve pageant animals.

Brooke Latzke-Davis won first place in the adult category, and scored four-VIP seats at the 4pm Christmas Vigil and a $75 Williams and Sonoma gift certificate.

It was a close call in both categories, and the remaining cookies sold quickly at the bake sale table. Well done!

Making Giving Joyful

We recognize that the many appeals during this time of year can be a challenge for each family trying its best to be as generous as possible during the holidays.

The Christmas season, however, proves to be a popular time for giving. We are grateful if you choose to support The Madeleine School during this holiday season!

Any gifts received during the holiday season, will be matched by the Joseph E. Weston Public Foundation and count toward our $55,000 Annual Fund goal!

For those driven by the holiday spirit to give at the end of the year, please visit The Madeleine School Giving Page at www.themadeleine.edu/schoolgiving.

Our best to you for a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Mrs. Chambers' Tech Cornercellphone

When should I get my child a phone?

This is a question that we as educators get a lot. Purchasing a phone for your child is a very personal choice. There are a lot of factors that go into this decision. Common Sense Media has put out a guide for parents with things to consider, rules to set, and options for plans and phone choices. I have this decision coming up in the next few years in my own life as well. I hope this guide will help those of you out there at the stage of considering a phone for your child.

ssSt. Stephens' Lunch Program

Update and special request

A big thank you to both the 6th and 5th grades for bringing in lunches the last two Tuesdays. Mrs. Grant’s 6th grade class brought in 181 lunches, and Mrs. Hoglund’s 5th Grade brought in 136. Thank you! As the weather becomes colder and wetter our shelters become much busier and everything helps.

Speaking of the shelters becoming busier . . . mark your calendars for Tuesday, December 18 when we will do another all-school lunch drive for St. Stephens. This means ALL CLASSES are asked to participate by having each student bring in at least 5 lunches. Feel free to make them festive with Christmas decorations as well. This bounty will help tremendously to fill some gaps for those in need while we are all on Christmas vacation.

FORMED—An Advent Preparation Resource

The Madeleine has purchased access to a website called “FORMED,” where you can find a wealth of information on our Catholic faith. Content is family-oriented with many programs designed especially for children. FORMED is offering short daily videos by Dr. Tim Gray to enrich your Advent preparations. Reflections for children are also available from Brother Francis to get the whole family spiritually prepped for Christmas. A simple registration is all that is required to automatically bring both reflection programs to you. Register at https://formed.org/promo/advent-reflections-registration. Check the selection that you have a FORMED account through the parish. No access code is required to receive these daily reflections, however, now would be a great time to register to take advantage of all FORMED offerings throughout the year. Sign up today at formed.org by using the Parish Access Code: QKX7TK. Access to FORMED is also available on the go by downloading the app on iTunes or Google Play Store. Questions: Darlene Maurer, dmaurer@themadeleine.edu.
