February 22, 2019

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I would say that our Open House activities, Tuesday’s Prospective Families information night and Wednesday’s School Tours, were a great success. Our statistics showed that 39 families came for the evening presentation and 28 families came for tours. We had an overwhelming number of applications turned in so we should have full enrollment next year! This successful event doesn’t just happen on its own and I have many people to thank. Our Development Office, mainly Caryn and Cheri with help from Rich Hammons, handled advertising through a variety of sources. Cathy Bargovan and Lia Ryan provided the hospitality with hot coffee and tasty treats. Julie Baldwin arranged for numerous parents to be on hand both days to greet our visitors and tell the Madeleine story. Father Mike, Melanie and Jon DeBellis, Sara Dillon, and Alisa Pyszka were on the Tuesday night program and each shared something unique about our school from our rigorous curriculum to the welcoming community to our emphasis on educating the whole child.  We also recognize that “word of mouth” is the best way to bring people to our door, so thank you to all who have encouraged their friends to check us out. It’s working!

Blessings,

Susan

February 25 to March 1

During this time of year, it is important we remember those living on the streets without adequate shelter and warmth. The week of February 25, Student Government is hosting a mug drive for the St. Francis Dining Hall. St. Francis Dining Hall serves hot meals to those in need in our community, and they are in need of more mugs. Please donate your used or unused mugs to the boxes located in each of the classrooms. We appreciate your support.

scienceScience Night 2019

Thursday, February 28 @ 6:30pm

You’re invited! The Madeleine School proudly presents Science Night 2019 on Thursday, February 28th from 6:30pm – 8:00pm in the Parish Hall. For this event, please enter and exit only through the main Parish Hall door by the circular driveway!

The middle school will be hosting an evening of science challenges and fun for scientists of all ages. Parents and children are invited to play at the bridge station, make their own rocket, build science toys, or compete in the Egg Drop Challenge (Click here for rules).

Middle school students will be also presenting many exciting science demonstrations. All of the 6 – 8th grade science projects will be on display in Parish Hall. See you there!

Volunteers Needed:

We need a few parents to monitor doors so that everyone is safe, and the building is secure. I try to limit the shifts to 30 minutes so that parents can enjoy the evening, too. Please give Susan Steele a call or email if you can commit to a 30 minute shift between 6:30 to 8:00.

Madeleine School Principal Search

Finding a new principal is a big deal. Hopefully it only happens once or twice in a generation. We understand that you probably have many questions about the process.

While much of the search process is confidential to protect the applicants and the integrity of the process, we will share what we can here in Footnotes. As of this week, here’s what’s going on:

• The Madeleine School Principal Search Committee is being formed. It will include Father Mike, at least one sitting principal from another Portland Catholic School and representatives from our School Advisory Committee (SAC), our school faculty, our parent community and our parish.

• The Search Committee will meet multiple times in the coming months to plan, review applications and interview candidates.

Please click here to read information provided by the Archdiocese that will be taken into consideration by The Madeleine School Search Committee, including principal qualifications, essential functions and major responsibilities, and principal roles and characteristics.

The members of The Madeleine School Advisory Committee (SAC) will be informally checking in with our community regarding your vision for our next principal. Please feel free to reach out to any of them to shares your thoughts.

The S.A.C. members are: Fr. Mike Biewend, Susan Steele, Catherine Glavan (Chair), Erskine Williams (Assistant-Chair), Diana Nunez, John LaBarca, Lance Mayhew, Karis Stoudamire-Phillips, Jeff Allen, Brian Cratsenberg, Jen Johnson, Meg Scharle (Pastoral Council Representative), Alisa Pyszka (Parents Club Representative), Caryn Fiedler (Development Representative).

Your 2017 Paddle Raise Dollars at Work

New Furnishings Arriving Daily!

In 2017 our generous auction guests raised their paddles high and donated $45,900 in restricted funds to make The Commons Less Common.

The first changes to The Commons happened over the summer of 2018 when the entire space was brightened with a fresh coat of paint and the installation of new cabinetry. Furnishings were not ordered over the summer due to the installation of the new sprinkler and emergency evacuation systems. We didn't want to take the chance that all our new furniture would get covered in dust or accidentally damaged.

Fall brought the arrival of a new, large area rug in the area shared by music classes and our after-school program. With the announcement of more construction over Christmas Break, the decision was made to order the furniture in early 2019.

And now, we are happy to announce that new furnishings are arriving daily. Be sure to stop by The Commons to check out our 12 new matching chairs in a sunny shade of yellow, our new "Spicy Lime" bean bags and 10 "Surfs." A Surf is both a seat and a writing surface, which enables kids to work in a fun and comfortable way on the floor with their friends. Keep your eyes peeled for some colorful soft seating, another area rug and some new tables.

Counselor's CornerUllman

Recommendation from Mrs. Ullman

Hello, Madeleine Community: Two of my favorite professionals are collaborating on a workshop in the "neighborhood" and it should be a day well-spent if working with teens is a subject that interests you. Additionally, Howard will be presenting with his colleagues in May on a topic that highlights his true expertise: Healthy Masculinity. Let me know if you have any questions about these workshops or professionals. Thanks.

Carolyn Ullman, School Counselor

Helping Teens

On February 22 Howard Hiton will be teaming up with Yshai Boussi LPC, to offer a workshop at the McMenamins Kennedy School entitled, "Helping Teens: blending compassion and effectiveness with a population that may or may not want our help." We will discuss methods for engaging teens in therapy, consider the impact of technology on adolescents, look at harm reduction strategies to address teen drug use, and much more. You can register through Yshai's website. Here is a flyer with more details.

Healthy Masculinities

Then on May 11, along with his long time collaborators, Peter Mortola and Stephen Grant, Howard will share in a full day conversation entitled Promoting Healthy Masculinities: A Workshop for Parents and Professionals at the Catlin Gabel School. During that day he will explore three of the most vexing issues for those working with or parenting boys: guiding boys to develop healthy sexuality, teaching boys to own and manage their aggression, and assisting boys to form healthier relationships with devices. Stay tuned for more details and registration information.
