April 5, 2019

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Volunteering is one of the best ways to be involved in the life of the school. The Madeleine really depends on the generous souls who step forward with their time and talent to support the many programs and initiatives that are a part of the smooth functioning of the school. Two very important opportunities are coming up and I wanted to call your attention to the following.

The School Advisory Council (SAC) consists of nine members who advise the pastor and principal on policy and governance issues. Members serve for three years on staggered terms and so each year we need three new people to fill these positions. If you think this is something that might interest you, please take a look at the SAC application form in today’s Footnotes and don’t hesitate to ask any questions of current members or me.

Our Parents Club is charged with three main tasks….fundraising, fun-raising, and parent education. Under the dedicated leadership of Alisa Pyszka, and her loyal executive board, a myriad of events are hosted throughout the year to build the wonderful community we call The Madeleine. Alisa has agreed to stay on for another year (yeah, Alisa!), but we have a few more spots to fill. Alisa needs a co-chair who will assume the job the following year. Other possible openings include handling communications, scrip sales, and the parent education program. If you would like more information on these positions, please give Alisa or me a call.

Have a great weekend,

Susan

P.S. Look for scrip order balances coming home today in Friday Folders. This will give you information on how much you have purchased so far this year. Details on deadline, etc. will be on the form.

April Fools Fun

The teachers and staff decided to play a little April Fools joke on the students on Monday. Since it was free dress for the students on the first day back from break, staff all showed up in school uniform.

Mrs. Steele was at a meeting all day so unfortunately we didn't get her in uniform. Great job to the rest of the well dressed staff!

kidskKids Kreations 2019

Deadline to Order... Wednesday, April 10

It’s spring at The Madeleine, which means it’s time for Kids Kreations cards! Kids Kreations cards feature artwork by our fabulous students and have been a mainstay at the school since 2005.

Each child creates an original piece of artwork, which is reproduced in color on high-quality notecards. A set of notecards includes 20 cards (5 1/2 x 4 1/4 inch) and envelopes for $27.50. The inside of the cards are blank so they are appropriate for any occasion. Your child will be credited for their artwork on the back of the card.

This year kindergarten through 4th grade students created a special portrait of their family or someone in their family using markers and colored pencils. Fifth through 8th grade students worked on linocuts, choosing subject matter to their liking.

To Place Your Order, Click Here

Ordering Deadline: Wednesday, April 10th (unfortunately, we cannot accept any late orders). We plan to send them home on May 10th, in time for Mothers Day.

support2019 Annual Fund Campaign Kicks Off

If we raise $50,000, we get $50,000!

Whether you choose to support the Area of Greatest Need, Tuition Assistance or the Endowment, your donation to the 2019 Annual Fund Campaign helps the families around you at Madeleine who struggle to pay tuition. This year alone, students at The Madeleine School have received almost $65,000 in financial aid.

Give what you can and know you have answered the call to help those in need. If we raise $50,000, the Joseph E. Weston Public Foundation will match it with another $50,000! Make a difference in the lives of those around you by making a Madeleine School education possible!

Jogathon Kick-off

The Madeleine School Jogathon will be held on Friday, May 10 and we are gearing up for the kick-off assembly on Monday, April 8. As most of you know, the Jogathon is the second largest fundraiser each year, raising money directly for the school's operational budget. Last year students raised $52,000 in pledges– another new school record! This year our goal is to raise over $45,000. The goal for each student is $175. We have a wide range of great prizes for top fundraisers as well as weekly prize incentives along the way! And the class that raises the most money will receive the honor of the “Golden Shoe” award and a classroom party. Last year, Ms. Witka’s 2nd grade class won the award.

Once again this year we will be using PledgeStar, a web based fundraising system, making it easier for family and friends to donate. You will be able to customize a private page for your family as well as monitor your student’s pledges. We strive for 100% student participation in our fundraising efforts. To get started, please follow the instructions below:

Go to http://pledgestar.com/madeleine

When you finish, the system will email pledge requests to your family and friends, allowing them to make secure credit card donations online or pay by check. You will be notified each time a pledge is made, and you can track your pledge progress online. If you need assistance, please call 1-888-598-7510.

This Week’s Challenge…

Anyone who sets up their PledgeStar page and sends at least 1 email will be entered into a prize drawing. The deadline is Sunday, April 7.

New Sponsorship Opportunity Available for the 2019

Sponsorships at the $250 level have sold out! A huge thank you to last year’s t-shirt sponsors who are returning and to our new sponsors. We are excited to offer an additional sponsorship opportunity for the Jogathon. Your company logo will be included on the Jogathon website and on an individual 2 x 3 banner to be displayed on event day. These spots are available for $150 and will be given out on a first come first served basis, so don’t miss your chance!

To purchase your spot or for more information, please email the Jogathon Chairs at:

Our Students' Personal Successes!

Sixth grade student, James C. recently qualified for and competed in the USA Swimming Northwest Age-Group Regional meet in Seattle. He competed against the top 12 year olds from Montana to Hawaii.

James finished very stong. He came in 1st place among all 12 year olds in the 100 Free and 200 Free, and placed in the top 5 in the region for each of his 6 events. For almost every event, he was the highest placed swimmer from Oregon.

Way to go James!

Date | networking dummiesSave the Date - NEW info and Sign Up Sheet

Grandparents and Honored Guests Day

Mark your calendars for Thursday, May 23rd for this annual event. Please note, this year the date follows on the Thursday after First Communion. The event will run from 12:45 to 3:00 that day.

We kindly request attendance by grandparents or a student's honored guest, which may include someone close to them such as an aunt, favorite neighbor or former nanny, etc. Parents may volunteer to help with the event or may attend Mass with their child if they would like to be part of this day as well.

If your child does not have someone in this role to attend this event, not to worry. Your child's teacher will make sure all are included in the activities that day.

PLEASE NOTE: the fifth and sixth grade class will not be at school for the event due to the Oaks Park Safety Patrol Field trip. This date was beyond our control. These students may be back in time for mass if grandparents are attending with siblings in other grades.

Register Your Guests

We are asking you to RSVP this year through this link. Thank you very much for filling this out as it greatly helps with the planning. If you have two sets of grandparents attending, please fill out a separate form for different households. Please RSVP at the latest by May 15, 2019. Thank you!

Questions? Contact Cheri Krebs at ckrebs@themadeleine.edu.

Where Kids Find Hate Online

Prior to my middle school unit on social media I had taken an anonymous survey of the students’ experiences with social media. As part of the survey, each student had to write down three words to describe social media. One of the words used by some students was hurtful. Common Sense Media released an article a few weeks ago about how kids encounter hate speech online and offers advice for parents to talk to kids about what to do. It is definitely worth the 5 minutes or so to read.

safeParking Lot Safety

Let’s work together to keep our kids safe in the parking lots.

During drop-off and pick-up, the south parking lot (near the playground) is designated for those driving through and dropping off their kids. If you are walking into the school, please park in the north parking lot (near the field).

Thank you for helping to keep our kids safe this spring!

scam alert

Another email fraudulently claiming to be from Father Mike has been received by some parishioners and staff asking them to get in touch with him.

Email and text message scams such as this are proliferating not only in our Archdiocese, but nationwide.

First, the victim receives a fake email or text from a fraudster impersonating Fr. Mike saying, “I need a favor from you.” or similar.

scam alert

If the victim replies to the email, the fraudster sends a response asking for iTunes or Google Play gift cards.

Each time the victim replies, the fraudster responds with even more sympathetic and urgent requests.

A few ways to know it’s fraud:

If you are ever in doubt as to whether a request for money or assistance is legitimate, call the School or Parish office during work hours.
