constructionCampus-wide Construction Starts Next Week!

Summer at The Madeleine traditionally means big projects, and this summer is no different. Sandwiched in between the traditional summer cleaning and all the events we have going on throughout the campus, we will begin construction for the Old Church Project and all its component parts, as well as The Commons Paddle Raise project.

The Old Church Project

School is out, and now it's time for construction to begin on the Old Church Project. While final construction details are still being hammered out (pun fully intended!), here are some basic construction details to keep in mind over the summer.

In general, the school will be closed to all but construction, cleaning, and parish staff. The exception will be the Haitian Garage Sale in July.

Parking along NE 23rd Avenue will be consumed by two demolition dumpsters and construction workers. The parking lots by the school and the Field of Dreams, as well as the parish hall turnaround will all have periods where they are unavailable due to equipment staging, but those shouldn't be long term. There will be construction fencing in some areas, and people should avoid those for safety.

Please bookmark the Old Church Project construction page, where regular construction updates and photos will be posted:

Making "The Commons" Less Common

Thanks to everyone who supported the paddle raise at the 2017 auction, our students will return in September to a refreshed Commons area! Our very own Madeleine dad, Jason Crawley, won a competitive bid process to design, build and install the shelves and cubbies that will provide more efficient storage space in The Commons for students during the day and YDP in the afternoons. A fresh coat of paint will also be applied to all surfaces. Finally, arrangements are being made for new furniture as well as a new, more colorful area rug in the Music/YDP area.

As you can tell, it’s going to be a busy summer for our Business Manager, James Wurzer. If you have questions about the construction, feel free to send him an email at jwurzer@themadeleine.edu.

Shopping for Summer? Your Amazon amazonPurchases Can Benefit The Madeleine!

If you’re planning to shop for vacation supplies and books and games to keep the kids busy, remember to use the Madeleine Parents Club Amazon link. This program donates a portion of everything you spend on Amazon to The Madeleine – and it won't cost you a single cent more! You can click this link to get shopping immediately, or you can read more about this “free fundraiser” here.

The more you shop on Amazon using www.themadeleine.edu/amazon, the more money the school makes. The prices and shopping experience are exactly the same as the “normal” Amazon, but using that link earns the school a minimum of 4% commission. It’s one of the easiest fundraisers you’ll ever find!

St. Stephen's Lunch Programlunches

Making a difference, one lunch at a time!

The 2017-18 school year has come to a close and our friends at St. Stephen’s are so impressed with each classroom's continual support to help feed Portland. During the last two weeks, 3rd Grade brought in 131 lunches, and the 2nd Grade finished the school year strong at 298 lunches!

Our grand total for the year is 7029!

Thank you again! This number does not include all of the extra sandwiches, chips, boxes of Mac and Cheese…or even a frozen turkey. It also does not count room parents who reminded us that it was our turn, or the last minute run to the market Monday night, or even the thoughtful notes and colorful bags that you and your children made. But it all counts. The effort and energy made a difference in someone’s life. I was able to see the appreciation first hand, and you truly did make a difference one sandwich at a time.

Thank you, thank you so much. Have a great summer.

Editor's Note: Many thanks to Tiffany and Reid Cooper for counting and transporting all the lunches this year! Our community could not have asked for better representatives.

goodbyeGoodbye from the Weis Family

Dear Susan, Fr. Mike, Staff, and Madeleine Community,

It is with bittersweet emotions that the Weis family bids farewell to The Madeleine School and parish community.  Twelve years ago my husband Michael and I started our family here at the Madeleine and never considered leaving this wonderful, loving, and compassionate community. Yet, for the very same reason that The Madeleine family kept us here, we must leave to take care of la mia famiglia.

Thank you to the teachers, staff, and to Fr. Mike at The Madeleine for shaping my children's love for learning, their faith in God, and their love for humanity. Gabriella and Micaela will greatly miss their friends, teachers, and the Madeleine community, as will Michael and I. We have been abundantly blessed!

Finally, as a substitute and former youth minister at The Madeleine, I want to thank you parents, for letting me enjoy your regazzi (ask the 4th graders what this means!) with their boundless curiosity and insatiable desire to learn. The greatest joy in life is to be a part of your child's spiritual and educational journey.

Don't forget to come visit us on Bainbridge Island!

God bless you,

Juliana, Michael, Gabriella, and Micaela Weis

Reconstruction Well Underway at Hogar Colegio la Milagrosa

Over $35,000 Raised for Puerto Rico at the 2017 Auction

As you may recall, in addition to the money raised to support our own school and students, 2017 auction attendees donated over $35,000 toward hurricane repairs at Hogar Colegio la Milagrosa orphange and school in Arecibo, Puerto Rico.

We're happy to report that we recently received a very positive progress report from Sister Claribel Camacho, the Director at Hogar Colegio la Milagrosa. Here's what she wrote:

Greetings,
It is with great joy that I write to you and thank you profusely for your great support for the reconstruction of Hogar Colegio la Milagrosa.

I am happy to tell you that construction is already well under way. Over 60% of the roof has already been installed. According to the engineer, by the end of June it will be fully installed and the exterior of all other damaged facilities repaired as well. Simultaneously, reconstruction of the building’s interior will start.

Thanks to your support, we hope to return to the living spaces in the orphanage in the fall.

Despite everything we went through over the last year and all the losses in our lives and struggles in our school, the girls worked very hard during the academic year and 93% of them achieved grade promotion.

One of our girls was adopted by a family. Three other girls will be placed with their extended families in late July. Meanwhile, the girls have been busy participating in activities such as ballet classes, performing in a summer concert and taking Zumba and art classes. In addition three new girls, ranging in age from 7 – 12 years old, joined the orphanage.

"What they did to one of these my brethren, you did for me"  Mt. 25.40

In Jesus and Mary,

Sister Claribel Camacho
Director
Hogar Colegio La Milagrosa
Arecibo, PR

Editor's note: Thank you again to Dunetchka Oterro Serrano and Cathy Armstrong for their persistent and selfless leadership on this unprecedented appeal.

Help Welcome New Families

to The Madeleine School

The Bridge Program creates a welcoming community by connecting new families with current families at the school. The goal of the program is to be a resource for new families and to help them navigate their first year at the Madeleine so they don’t feel left out, lost or overwhelmed.

Each volunteer is expected to check in with their Bridge family at least once over the summer, during the first week of school, and during the first trimester. In addition, there are three opportunities during the school year to get volunteer hours:

If you are interested in being a “bridge” for a new family, please contact Julie Baldwin at Julie.JulieBaldwin@gmail.com.

BraodwayBroadway Comes to The Madeleine! ~ Benefit for The Old Church Project

Saturday, June 16 @ 7 pm

The Madeleine Choir and Music Ministry will present an evening of Broadway music in a benefit for the Old Church Project on Saturday, June 16, at 7:00 pm.

The concert will showcase Broadway singer, Douglas Webster, as well as Michael Kissinger, and other Madeleine singers in selections from Les Miserables, Jesus Christ Superstar, Leonard Bernstein’s “Mass” and other musicals.Douglas Webster has appeared on Broadway, National tour and Regional theatre in the lead role as Jean Valjean in Les Miserables.

Mr. Webster is also the foremost leading authority on Leonard Bernstein’s Mass, having starred as the Celebrant in over twenty productions, including those at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center and for Saint Pope John Paul at The Vatican. Closer to home, you may have heard Douglas Webster at The Madeleine. He is frequently a guest soloist here at Christmas and for other special services, as well as a featured Baritone Soloist with the Bravo! Northwest Concert Series.

Help us celebrate great progress on our Capital Campaign! There will be a free will offering at the door. All donations will go towards the Old Church Renovation project.

Read the details on our Old Church Project website

Old Church Project...next steps and online donations

Question: After Commitment Weekend, what are the next steps with the Capital Campaign?

Answer: First, we thank everyone for all their patience with the onslaught of materials, emails, videos and announcements about the campaign. The most visible, public portion of the campaign is over. In the next weeks and months you’ll see us talk about it off and on, but you won’t be inundated every day. We will try to keep you up to date about the progress of construction, and yes, you’ll be seeing our Stairway to Success on a regular basis. Speaking of, at right, notice that we have passed the $3.2 million mark, moving in our $3.6 million Base Goal

Question: Why do I need to fill out a pledge card? Why can’t I just donate online?

Answer: Our campaign consultant advises that people tend to give more money in campaigns like this in a person-to-person situation. Now that the person-to-person portion of the campaign is nearly over, a Donate Online button has been activated to capture any commitments that did not occur during the paper pledge-card period.

One more interesting note—as the campaign will be audited by the Archdiocese as part of the construction loan application process, the paper pledge cards, which hold a signature, serve as a “paper trail” for them for the commitments. So, certain large gifts, or those over a longer time span, may trigger the need for a signed pledge card. We will follow up with any generous soul who makes a donation for which such a form is required.

Welcome Said and Solimah!

Said and Solimah and their children Sumaiya (6), Siti (2), and Shahid (1) are refugees who arrived from Malaysia in Portland almost two months ago through the Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement Program.

They fled the genocide against the Rohingya in their native country of Burma. The parish’s refugee ministry met them at the airport and are helping them as they resettle. Thanks to so many of you for your offers of help. Items that they still need are children’s DVDs and children’s books. A bigger task is helping the father Said find a job. Said is enrolling in language classes at PCC to expand his English.

In Malaysia, he worked in construction but he’s eager to explore new areas of employment. An entry level job would be perfect for him. Please pray for him, and if you have professional connections that could be a match for this family starting their life all over, please contact either Amanda Gray (aeg@pbl.net) or Catherine Glavan (catherine_geary@hotmail.com)

The Haitian Project Garage Sale is July 20–22—Save the date!

This weekend, the organizers of The Madeleine Haitian Project Garage Sale, one of our parish’s signature outreach ministries, will be speaking at all Masses to raise awareness and solicit volunteers and donations of items for sale. The Garage Sale benefits the Louverture Cleary School in Haiti, which offers a Catholic education to children who otherwise would not be able to afford an education.

The Garage Sale is July 20-22, with collections in the Parish Hall beginning July 9. Find more information, including detailed collection dates and hours, at www.themadeleine.edu/haitian.

Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!
