A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Lots of things to call your attention to this week, so let’s get started…….

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Parent/teacher conferences are coming up in late October. You can sign up for times online, and the directions to do so are in today’s Footnotes.

St. Vincent de Paul Food Drive

Next week is the feast day of St. Vincent de Paul, and our Thursday school Mass will celebrate his legacy of service to the poor and needy. We have a very active St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP) Society here at the Madeleine parish, and we try to support them in their mission. Beginning on Monday, we will begin a food drive for the SVDP food pantry. Please help us by donating non-perishable food items next week. Food will be collected in the classrooms and then our 8th grade will bring them to the pantry. Thank you for your support.

After-school Spanish Class

The after school Spanish class will begin next Wednesday. This is for students in grades K through 5th. If you haven’t signed up yet, you can find information below along with an enrollment form.

Madeleine Performance Choirs

Our new performance choirs will also begin next week. This opportunity is open to students in 3rd through 8th grades. An information packet was sent home earlier in the week which included a parent sign off sheet. Please return this sign off sheet by Monday.

Called to Protect Training

For those of you who are new to The Madeleine and wish to volunteer this year, you must attend a training for Called to Protect, the Archdiocesan child abuse prevention program. There are many opportunities to do this around the Archdiocese, but we will host one next week on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 7:00pm in the parish hall. Please see the article in today’s Footnotes on how you can locate other trainings if you can’t come to the one here.

Student Directory

Finally, you should have received a Student Directory today. This document is for school use only and should not be used for commercial purposes.

Have a great weekend.

Blessings,

Susan

musicBand Program Starts Up at The Madeleine

Dear Parents,
In the coming weeks your fifth through eighth grade student will have an opportunity to enrich their education with instruction on a band instrument.

One of the most positive experiences you can offer your child is the chance to learn self-discipline at the highest level via participation in band. In addition, their cooperative talents, self-expression, coordination, poise, sense of accomplishment, self-confidence and creative mind will all be nurtured through their study of instrumental music.

hitonMadeleine Parent Ed Night: "What About Boys?"

Wednesday, October 3 @ 6:30pm in Parish Hall

Nationally and locally boys represent 70% of middle school and high school discipline referrals. They make up two-thirds of those in special education classes. And their dropping rates of graduation and college attendance are cause for concern.

We know that relationships hold the key to improving boys’ health and academic performance. But how do we establish and maintain connections with boys?

In this workshop, participants will learn about boys’ unique developmental issues and explore ways to enhance communication with boys.

Speaker Howard Hiton has been a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) since 1987. He was the recipient of the Oregon Pediatric Society’s Award for Service to Children and the Oregon Peacemaker Award of Excellence for his support of youth. He is the author of Building on Strengths and a co-author of BAM! Boys Advocacy and Mentoring: Helping Boys Connect Through Physical Challenge and Strategic Storytelling, a Guidebook for Leading Boys Groups. Howard’s presentation style is consistently evaluated as being warm, engaging, and thought provoking.

announcementThree Spaces Available

Spread the word! We have space available in 1st grade, 4th grade and 6th grade for the 2018 - 2019 school year.

St. Stephen's Lunch Programlunches

Making a difference, one lunch at a time!

Our lunch program is off to the best start ever! Tina Hanselman’s 8th Grade class started our year strong by providing 223 lunches! Awesome job 8th grade! But, Mr. Parker’s 7th Grade students snuck in and beat it by a sandwich, and made 224 lunches! Way to Go! St. Stephen’s was very thankful for such amazing work.

When I saw the lunches made by the 7th graders, it reminded me to mention how meaningful and appreciated kind words and art work are. It only takes a few extra minutes, but a few kind words can really turn someone’s a day around.

grandmaVisit with the Elderly on Madeleine's Day of Service

In September we officially celebrate Grandparents with Grandparents Day.
Some of us are lucky to have grandparents in our lives, others not so lucky. But luckily for us, the Seniors at Laurelhurst Village - a local Assisted Living Facility on SE Stark - are always more than willing to be stand-in Grandparents.

Madeleine families will be visiting with them while they have their lunch on Saturday, September 29 as a part of the Madeleine Day of Service. You and your family are invited to join us - bring crafts, make cookies, do magic tricks! Whatever.

As a part of this important community activity there will be a table set up in heartthe back of the church at the end of this week's masses. Have your child stop by so they can make a special "LOVE" button for the seniors. Join us on Saturday September 29th or sign up to be a part of future holiday visits.

See the sign-up board in the main school hallway for more details.

serviceMadeleine Day of Service: Save the Date

September 29
The annual Madeleine Day of Service is Saturday, September 29. Volunteer groups will go out both morning and afternoon on Saturday, September 29, so you can sign up for a time slot that works with your schedule. Many of the opportunities are perfect for youth and adults. The Day of Service will conclude with a picnic barbeque back at The Madeleine for all volunteer participants. Sign ups will be available soon, so watch this space and the front hallway near the school doors for more information.

Parenting Teens in a Digital World

October 24

Presented by Yshai Boussi, LPC

This workshop will focus on helping you, as a parent, understand and support your teen around technology. Specifically, I'll share the latest data and research, cover social media and gaming and have lots of practical tips and suggestions to help you navigate this stuff effectively with your teen.

Both teens and parents welcome to attend. Teens attend at no cost.

The current rate lasts until October. If you sign up for both this workshop and another scheduled in February about helping your teen overcome anxiety, depression and excessive stress, you can sign up for both and get a further reduced rate.

If you're motivated to come to one or both of these workshops, but don't have the funds, please email me, and I'll make sure you're able to attend. We've all gone through periods where we need a little extra support, so please don't hesitate to reach out.
