About The Haitian Project
The Haitian Project is a nonprofit organization that supports and oversees one of the very best secondary education programs in Haiti—Louverture Cleary School, a Catholic secondary boarding school outside of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, providing a rigorous, tuition-free education to academically-talented and motivated young men and women from Haitian families who cannot afford the cost of their children’s education.
With an almost four-decade track record of successfully using education to improve the lives of children from some of the most economically-disadvantaged families in the Western Hemisphere, The Haitian Project believes that education is Haiti’s best investment:
- LCS students have a historical pass rate on Haiti’s national exam of 100 PERCENT—double the national rate—in a country where fewer than five percent of young people graduate high school;
- Thanks to The Haitian Project’s robust university scholarship and career advancement program, LCS graduates go on to attend university to become doctors, accountants, engineers, teachers, and business owners—earning an average of 10x the per-capita income just several years into their professional careers;
- And in a country where fewer than 30 percent of college graduates stay in the country, historically nearly 90 percent of Louverture Cleary alumni are in university or in professional careers IN HAITI.
To support this vital mission, the Madeleine Parish comes together every summer with time, talent and merchandise to host The Haitian Project Garage Sale, which features an amazing variety of gently used goods, from books to furniture to electronics. Over one hundred volunteers join together in July, with others working year-round, organizing one of the most anticipated annual summer events in Portland.
If you wish to volunteer your time, or if you have merchandise to donate, please contact Steve Holmes at steveholmes@shtrucking.com or 503-706-7937.
You can make a difference! Your involvement will help educate Haiti’s future leaders and help build The Haitian Project’s second school—the Model Campus—that will be replicated across Haiti for the Louverture Cleary Schools Network—a national system of 10 top-notch, tuition-free, Catholic secondary boarding schools combined with a robust university scholarship program.
