Welcome to The Madeleine Music Ministry
God has bestowed upon his people the gift of song. God dwells within each human person, in the place where music takes its source. Indeed, God, the giver of song, is present whenever his people sing his praises…
(Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship)
The Madeleine Music Ministry is built upon a cornerstone of music, faith, and community. Choir members embrace our parish slogan, “All are Welcome” with sacred music that is “catholic” in its universal appeal – crossing musical boundaries with an eclectic blend of Gregorian chant, traditional hymns, contemporary praise, spirituals and Gospel music.
We believe that singing is for everyone – from the very young to the well-seasoned singer, it is the ultimate connection between mind, body and spirit. It makes you happy, releases stress, teaches discipline and commitment, builds confidence, community and spirituality – and is just plain FUN!!
Finally, when we sing, we care for God’s creation. The human voice is a gift from God. We sing before we speak – therefore, singing is the most elemental gift that we can receive from our Creator. At The Madeleine, we believe that we are called to care for God’s creation. Much the same as a plant with no water, the gift of song will wither and die if it is not nurtured. If we are truly to be stewards of all Creation, then caring for and developing our human voice is necessary to praise and magnify the Lord in our homes, congregations, and community.

Why I Sing: Choir Testimonials
When I sing, I feel God’s pleasure!
(adapted from Eric Liddell “Chariots of Fire”)
I’m a member of the Madeleine Music Ministry because I enjoy singing. I have sung in church and school choirs from the time I was in 6th grade through high school and college. In 1975, my family and I moved to Portland and, shortly after, joined the Madeleine Parish where I have been a choir member for approximately 40 years. During that time, I have appreciated the opportunity to learn and sing different types of liturgical music under the direction of several talented choir directors. I am also very grateful for the friendship of my fellow choir members. I believe the Madeleine Music Ministry is important in that it helps and encourages the congregation to sing together with one voice, all in praise of God.

Using the gift that He gave me to praise Him is the best way I know to pray.
—Pat Lach, soprano
I have sung in church choirs directed by Maria for over 20 years. It keeps my soul nourished.
—Marilyn Robb, alto
I am a member of the Madeleine Music Ministry because music brings me closer to God. It is my prayer, my peace, my joy. Being in the choir allows me to share that prayer, peace, and joy with the Madeleine community and deepen my relationship with our Heavenly Father.
—Anna Collins, soprano
I joined when I was 11 years old, I am now 22! I’m a part of the music ministry because I fell in love with singing at a very young age. My dad, Mark has always been my biggest fan and supporter and I love singing with him.
