A Note from Susan
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Only one more week to go! It seems trite to say it, but it seems each year goes by more quickly than the last…..even though they have the same number of days. Lots to finish in the next 7 days.
- Summer packets… Angela is still waiting on 12 families to turn theirs in. Thank you so much to the families who took care of this task.
- Volunteer hour and scrip bills, and tuition need to be taken care of. Report cards and diplomas will not be distributed until all accounts are completed.
- Parish affiliation forms are due to Fr. Mike if you wish to be billed at the “in-parish” rate.
- Library books need to be returned.
- Medication needs to be picked up in the office. It will be disposed of after school is out.
- Lost and found table is overflowing with articles. Come take a look before it is donated.
On another note…..I am happy to announce that Mary Hoglund has accepted the position of 5th grade teacher. Mary is a former Madeleine school parent and has two children at Central Catholic. For the past five years she has been working at the University of Portland supervising student teachers. She has seen “the good, the bad, and the ugly” in that role and has a great love and appreciation for the Madeleine school community climate. She began her teaching career in Washington and has worked with students in grades 1-5. She and her family have been members of the Madeleine parish ever since they moved to Portland, even serving as faith formation director for a few years. Welcome, Mary!
Sincerely,
Susan

A Note from Mrs. Doran
Dear Madeleine Community,
It is hard for me to believe that it was 17 years ago that I first accepted a teaching position and entered the doors of The Madeleine. Moving back to Portland from Washington DC, the only thing I knew about this little school was that the outside was painted the color of a Band-Aid. It did not take me long to experience first-hand all that this wonderful school and church community had to offer: support and encouragement for one another, hard-working students and parents, service opportunities to help others, and many examples of those who are true disciples of Jesus. Seventeen years later, after getting married at The Madeleine and having two sons, I am truly grateful for the opportunities this community has provided me. You have supported and encouraged me. Thank you for entrusting your children to me and allowing me the privilege of being part of their educational journeys. I feel blessed in so many ways.
May God's blessings be with you always,
Michelle
A Note from Mrs. Galash
Dear Madeleine families,
Thank you for letting me share a small part of your children's world. I will miss them and their amazing creativity. I will also miss the energy of the school days and the sure flow of the seasons. I will miss being surrounded by all things art, and watching as these budding artists blossom. I have kept every note and every picture ever given to me, and I will always treasure them.
The Irvington neighborhood and the Madeleine have been my community for more than three decades, especially since my own children attended The Madeleine back in the days when the only play structure was a single wooden one that my dare devil daughter regularly flung herself from, prompting phone calls from the office urging me to have her keep her feet on the ground. If you look carefully at the Mission Statement mural by the office, you will see my baby's footprint among the flowers I painted there. (He is now almost 19 and was known as "Galoshes" to last year's Outdoor School students) The St. Francis bird feeder in the Garden Room was painted in memory of my grandmother and the happy childhood days I spent playing in her beautiful gardens and watching the birds at her feeder. This school holds many memories for me.
I'm not going away, just stepping aside to care for my mom. I am honored and grateful to be able to do so. Mrs. Steele knows I will happily act as substitute for the new art teacher should he or she need one. You are likely to run into me walking in the neighborhood or working in the Madeleine Garden and Wildlife Habitat, adjacent to the Field of Dreams, on garden clean up days. I hope you will join in the effort to beautify the campus, bring back the Monarch Butterflies, and save the honeybees. The Monarch's Milkweed plants are just about to bloom with their cotton candy pink star blossoms. Stop by the Madeleine Garden for a peek. You may even see our first Monarch of the season. The Garden is both legacy and the future.
I look forward to seeing what fresh and exciting art your sons and daughters create with their next art teacher as he or she brings new energy, experiences, and passion into the art room. Two of the hardest things about leaving are knowing how much art I couldn't squeeze into in the limited time I had with your children, and knowing I won't be there to do those much anticipated "I can't wait until it's my class's turn to do that project" projects. Many of you have asked if I would be willing to do Art Nights for parents or family/kid art classes or camps. When life settles down, that would be lovely. I can't imagine not being around people making art. (I'm in the directory). Maybe I will even have a little time to make some art of my own.
Keep making art.
Peace,
Mrs. Galash

Fun on the Eighth Grade Ashland Trip
The 8th Grade trip to Ashland was a wonderful success. We had a fantastic time. A memorable trip. We have several “thank yous” to some very special people.
- Thank you to the Parents Club for their generous donation.
- Thank you to the families who dined at Fire+Stone to help raise funds for this trip.
- Thank you to the amazing chaperones who went far above and beyond the call of duty, and were super fun too: Alison Anderson, Katherine Wilson, Lynn Lindgren-Schreuder, Eric Anctil, Patrick Dugan, Tom Gianotti and Mike Gold.

Help Welcome New Families
to The Madeleine School
The Bridge Program creates a welcoming community by connecting new families with current families at the school. The goal of the program is to be a resource for new families and to help them navigate their first year at the Madeleine so they don’t feel left out, lost or overwhelmed.
Each volunteer is expected to check in with their Bridge family at least once over the summer, during the first week of school, and during the first trimester. In addition, there are three opportunities during the school year to get volunteer hours:
- New Parents Potluck in September (approx. two hours)
- Open House in February (approx. two hours)
- School Tours in February (approx. two hours)
If you are interested in being a “bridge” for a new family, please contact Julie Baldwin at Julie.JulieBaldwin@gmail.com.

Shopping for Summer? Your Amazon Purchases Can Benefit The Madeleine!
If you’re planning to shop for vacation supplies and movies/books/games to keep the kids busy, remember to use the Madeleine Parents Club Amazon link. This program donates a portion of everything you spend on Amazon to The Madeleine – and it won't cost you a single cent more! You can click this link to get shopping immediately, or you can read more about this “free fundraiser” here.
The more you shop on Amazon using www.themadeleine.edu/amazon, the more money the school makes. The prices and shopping experience are exactly the same as the “normal” Amazon, but using that link earns the school a minimum of 4% commission. It’s one of the easiest fundraisers you’ll ever find!
