June 8, 2018

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I am so pleased to announce that we received our WCEA (Western Catholic Education Association) accreditation term this week. We were awarded a full six year term with no revisits, which is the highest term they confer.

The Visiting Team wrote they “…wish to commend the pastor, principal, faculty, staff, parents and students for working together to make the school a loving, caring and learning environment ……….they experienced a community where everyone is striving to provide a Catholic environment where quality education is a priority……Catholic Identity and community spirit were definitely evident to a high degree.”

Now the second best part of this news is that we do not have to do this for another six years!

Madeleine's Got Talent

On another shining note……We had the best Talent Show ever on Monday! We should tweak the name to “Madeleine’s Got Talent!” Our students were so polished and fearless in their presentations. Lots of hard work was evident. Lots of hard work on the part of Susan Samuelson, Molly Briscoe, Anne Thompson, and Kris Thompson was also a big part of the success of the event. Thank you so much to these parents who took on all the responsibility of the production (and clean-up!).

With gratitude,

Susan

An Amazing, Record-Breaking Jogathon!

Jogathon Raises $52,000

The Jogathon results are in, and it was another record breaking year!! Students received over $52,000 in pledges. We will share the results at Monday’s assembly including top fundraisers, top runners, highest participation and of course the coveted Golden Shoe award for the class who raised the most money. Thank you to all the students and families for supporting this important fundraiser and making it the most successful Jogathon yet!

Editor's Note: Thank you, thank you, thank you to Kelsi Charlesworth and Shelby Walker for leading the Jogathon for the past six years! What an amazing run! The Jogathon is the school's second biggest fundraiser each year after the auction, and our school would not be as fabulous as it is without all the funds they've helped raise over the years. You will be missed!

Help Welcome New Families

to The Madeleine School

The Bridge Program creates a welcoming community by connecting new families with current families at the school. The goal of the program is to be a resource for new families and to help them navigate their first year at the Madeleine so they don’t feel left out, lost or overwhelmed.

Each volunteer is expected to check in with their Bridge family at least once over the summer, during the first week of school, and during the first trimester. In addition, there are three opportunities during the school year to get volunteer hours:

If you are interested in being a “bridge” for a new family, please contact Julie Baldwin at Julie.JulieBaldwin@gmail.com.

Madeleine Ryder Cup Recap

"Team Cratzy" wins the Cup

Central Oregon was the site of the inaugural Madeleine Ryder Cup golf tournament on June 2 and 3. This event was one of the 2017 Madeleine Auction items, and it drew 16 participants (15 Madeleine dads, and one from St. Agatha).

The players stayed in Black Butte (thanks to generous donations of housing from Jenn Langhus’ uncle, and also from an All Saints family) and played golf at Aspen Lakes.

Saturday morning we played “Four ball” matches, and ended up tied 2-2. After lunch at the course, we played a two-person scramble format in the afternoon, and Team Cratzy (captained by Brian Cratsenberg) took two and a half points, with Team Goody (captained by Patrick Goodman) earning one and a half points.

We had a deluxe dinner Saturday night arranged by Jim Doherty and Jerod Fitzgerald. After dinner, the captains put together the pairings for the Singles matches to be played on Sunday. The fortunes (and birdies) were with Team Cratzy, which prevailed and earned the Cup with a 10-6 point total.

The players all returned home safely on Sunday, well rested and well fed, and with plenty of stories of an eagle (Lucas), gritty 18th hole chip-ins (Josh), best round of his life (Andy), and plenty of “that almost went in” putts. We were blessed with a weekend of fantastic weather, golf, and camaraderie. Watch for more news about the next Madeleine Ryder Cup – where all are welcome (especially those that can reliably sink a 10-foot putt).

markers

Bring in Your Used Markers

The Madeleine is putting the MAGIC into Magic markers with a very cool program at our school. It’s called Crayola ColorCycle – an amazing new program devised to turn used markers into energy!

We will be collecting used markers that are ready to be discarded. The markers will be sent to a facility where they will be converted into clean fuel. This fuel can be used to power vehicles, heat homes, cook meals and more!

If it feels wrong throwing the dead / dying markers in the trash ... and it is equally annoying to have useless markers hanging around - then this is just what you have been waiting for!

Please help support our efforts by sending your kids in with any used markers you may have around the house – even non-Crayola brands. The drop-off boxes will be located in the entry way starting Monday June 4th, up until the last day of school.

And just like that - we can magically keep tons of plastic out of landfills each year.

Thanks so much!

Kris Thompson & Kelley Groves

amazonShopping for Summer? Your Amazon Purchases Can Benefit The Madeleine!

If you’re planning to shop for vacation supplies and books and games to keep the kids busy, remember to use the Madeleine Parents Club Amazon link. This program donates a portion of everything you spend on Amazon to The Madeleine – and it won't cost you a single cent more! You can click this link to get shopping immediately, or you can read more about this “free fundraiser” here.

The more you shop on Amazon using www.themadeleine.edu/amazon, the more money the school makes. The prices and shopping experience are exactly the same as the “normal” Amazon, but using that link earns the school a minimum of 4% commission. It’s one of the easiest fundraisers you’ll ever find!
