May 27, 2016

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Many thanks to the wonderful parents who have returned their June packets to Mrs. Rosebrook. Kudos to the winners of a Starbucks card for being one of the first 20 to turn in the paperwork: Gaber, O’Connor (Kelsi), Dugan, Allen (Sara), Coe, Berry, O’Leary, Thompson (Anne), Rodarte, Coughlin-Glaser, Codino, Kelleher, Kern, Nguyen, Wilson, Beaulieu, Stokke, Diani, Drapcho, and Hardy. Perhaps the last 20 need to buy Angela a Starbucks card????

We welcomed 30 new students and their parents to our campus yesterday. The students visited their new classrooms while we kept the parents busy with information about the Madeleine school. It was a lively group who easily engaged in conversation, making connections with their new school community. Many thanks to all the people who gave of their time to welcome the newcomers, especially our Parent Club hospitality crew, Evelyn Bian and Cathy Bargovan. Their enthusiasm for the coming year was infectious, even though we aren’t finished with this year.

Today’s Jogathon was a wonderful finish to Spirit Week. This annual event just keeps getting better and better. Kudos to Shelby Walker, Kelsi Charlesworth, Ann Reno, and their cast of volunteers who worked so hard for the success of the run. I don’t know where we are with our pledges, but the excitement this morning was “through the roof.”

Get ready for a new principal…..no, I am not retiring yet, but Teddy Kelleher will be in charge of school next Thursday because his parents were the highest bidders for this auction item last November. I am not quite sure what he has planned (or what will be allowed!) but stay tuned for some fresh, new ideas.

Have a relaxing Memorial Day weekend.

                                                                Sincerely,

                                                                Susan

Help Welcome New Families to Madeleine School

The Bridge Program creates a welcoming community by connecting new families with current families at the school. The goal of the program is to be a resource for new families and to help them navigate their first year at the Madeleine so they don’t feel left out, lost or overwhelmed.

Each volunteer is expected to check in with their Bridge family at least once over the summer, during the first week of school, and during the first trimester. In addition, there are three opportunities during the school year to get volunteer hours:

If you are interested in being a “bridge” for a new family, please contact Julie Baldwin at Julie.JulieBaldwin@gmail.com.

Shopping for Summer? Your Amazon Purchases Can Benefit The Madeleine!

amazonIf you’re planning to shop for vacation supplies and movies/books/games to keep the kids busy, remember to use the Madeleine Parents Club Amazon link. This program donates a portion of everything you spend on Amazon to The Madeleine – and it won't cost you a single cent more! You can click this link to get shopping immediately, or you can read more about this “free fundraiser” here.

The more you shop on Amazon using www.themadeleine.edu/amazon, the more money the school makes. The prices and shopping experience are exactly the same as the “normal” Amazon, but using that link earns the school a minimum of 4% commission. It’s one of the easiest fundraisers you’ll ever find!

youthYouth Ministry

June 5th and June 12th @ 7pm

With the Madeleine Spring Musical right around the corner, we have decided to have our last two middle school youth nights of the school year on Sunday, June 5th and Sunday, June 12th from 7-8:15pm. These youth nights promise to be memorable and fun, so bring a friend and your sunny attitude!  Speaking of sun, hot weather calls for play time on the field. Don't forget your athletic shoes.

In the meantime, do not miss the Walk For Water event taking place at Laurelhurst Park on Sunday, May 22nd at 1pm to raise awareness for poor communities living without adequate drinking water. Come walk so they don't have to walk!  See you there!

infoParents Club: Thank You, and Looking Ahead

As the 2015-16 school year comes to a close, there are some changes happening in the Parents Club. Our fearless President, Jonas Allen, is moving on to a different role in the Club. As the first ever Dad Parent's Club President, Jonas brought a ton of energy and creativity to his role. He will be a hard act to follow and for those who haven't heard... WTF! Who's That Fella? What's That Fundraiser? Wasn't That Fun? Yes, it was - and will continue to be. Thank you Jonas for your hard work this year!

Thank you also to Caryn Fiedler who has done an amazing job as the New Parent Coordinator, Marni Campbell for her work as a hospitality coordinator and Lisa Luna who will be leaving her role as Parent Education Coordinator. Thank you all for everything you've done to help Parents Club and the Madeleine succeed.

Next year, the Parents Club Executive Committee will include: Deborah Naugler (President), Mary Starrs-Mortimer (Vice President and Parent Education Coordinator), Susan O'Leary (Treasurer) with Amy Ratigan serving as Treasurer-in-training, Debbie Ryan (Secretary), Room Rep Coordinator (Kristin Rios), Parents Club Hot Lunch Coordinator (Molly Briscoe), Cathy Bargovan (Hospitality Coordinator - with help from Evelyn Bian who has served as co-Hospitality Coordinator for several years), Julie Baldwin (New Parent Coordinator), Susan Samuelson (Fundraiser Coordinator), and Jonas Allen (Parents Club Past President and SAC Liaison).

The Parents Club Exec Committee members are but a few of the Parents in the Club. YOU are a member of the club! Please come to the monthly meetings to learn more about our school and make a difference in the daily lives of our children. Parent's Club is super fun and all parents are encouraged to attend. Get involved! We need you. Finally, if you don't feel like attending a meeting, please feel free to email one of us or chat in the hallways. We need ideas. We need parents. We need you!

Backpacksbackpack

Sometimes we are so focused on doing everything we can for the health and benefit of our children that we overlook significant opportunities right under our noses. Backpack weight is one of those opportunities.

Madeleine School has been actively working to reduce backpack weights through a myriad of practices. Heavy textbooks rarely go home. Many of our textbooks are online. Students are encouraged to have two sets of essential tools, such as loose-leaf paper, pens, crayons, markers, scissors, rulers, etc. so they are not carrying them back and forth; one for school and one for home. Students are reminded to clean out their binders and leave graded homework, tests, and worksheets at home. Additionally, Madeleine is continuing to looks at ways to further reduce weight. Sharing this information was one important step, as it’s critical that parents are aware and play an active role as well. Madeleine will also continue to engage teachers and educate middle school students on the topic.

What can parents do?

St. Stephens Lunch Programlunches

Making a difference, one lunch at a time!

The fourth grade has done an awesome job this year, and this week was no exception. Ms. Slavik’s class brought in 220 lunches (plus two bags of additional sandwiches). Thank you!

We have made over 7,000 lunches during this school year. Let's keep it up and end the year strong!

Thank you, Madeleine!

225 Walkers at Inaugural Carry5 Walk for Water!

The rain stayed away and the sun poked out as people of all ages flowed into Laurelhurst Park on Sunday to carry water for 5 kilometers, walking in solidarity with the 1 billion people around the world who still carry water every day.

Together, we raised more than $7,500—enough to fund five water systems in the urban slums of Bangladesh. Instead of carrying water every day, more girls can go to school, women will have time to earn money, and children will live healthier lives.

If you want to help more people in need of clean water and toilets or if you didn't get a chance to donate, there's still time! Click here to donate.

Join us October 7 for Water1st-Beer2nd—a fun event for the grown-ups and you don't have to carry water!

To get involved with the Water1st community in Portland, contact Molly.

Thank you!

Save the date! Deacon Anthony’s ordination to the Priesthood

Saturday, June 4 • Mass of Thanksgiving 10:00 am Sunday, June 5

Deacon Anthony Ahamefule has been one of the most popular seminarians/deacons we’ve had the pleasure of hosting at The Madeleine. His hard work, willingness to learn and to teach, and humble manner have combined to make him truly “our own.”
Deacon Anthony’s ordination to the Priesthood will be Saturday, June 4, 11:00 at St. Mary’s Cathedral. His Mass of Thanksgiving at The Madeleine will be at our 10:00 am Mass on Sunday, June 5, with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall. All are welcome to both Masses

Help show your appreciation for all he has done for us by attending one or both Masses.

NOTE: Many people have asked what sort of ordination gift might be helpful. We are aware of several options, one of which is a collection of funds for a vehicle or for vestments and a chalice. If you wish to contribute, the easiest path is to include your gift in a card or envelope and mail or drop off at the Parish Office. Please be sure to note that this gift is for Father Anthony.

The Haitian Project Garage Sale Planning Meeting

Sale dates for this year’s Garage Sale are Friday, July 22 through Sunday, July 24.
