A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Whew, what a week! We kicked it off with First Communion and the Book Fair and ended it with New Student Visitation, Grandparents Day, and the Art Show. Many thanks to our army of volunteers who helped make all of these events so special. We are truly blessed!

Thank you, thank you!

Thank you to the Book Fair team of Jenny Mangelsdorf and Melanie DeBellis who, along with their stellar team of volunteers, put on another fabulous Book Fair. The final numbers are still being tallied, but I am confident that the team sold enough books to guarantee many new titles in the library this fall and a good-sized donation to the Children’s Book Bank.

Our new students and their families were greeted with beautifully set tables of treats thanks to Cathy Bargovan, Kristen LaBarca and Lia Ryan who provided hospitality to our visitors. And, thank you to Alisa Pyszka and Stephanie Savage for taking time out of their busy day to talk to the new parents about Parents Club and the Auction.

More than 150 grandparents joined us on campus on Thursday for Grandparents Day. Many thanks to Cheri Krebs and her team of volunteers for coordinating the day. We heard from many grandparents how much they enjoyed spending time in the classroom with their grandchildren. And, how much they enjoyed dessert!

Last, but certainly not least, our entire community owes thanks to Mrs. Parmeter and her volunteers who worked tirelessly to mount and hang hundreds and hundreds of pieces of student artwork for our annual art show. I heard from many parents who particularly enjoyed reading the artist statements, which were a new addition this year.

End-of-Year Reminders

After such a fun-filled week, it’s time to get down to end-of-year business. At this time of year, reminders are a key part of my job . . . so here we go!

After you finish all the items on the reminder list above, have a wonderful three-day weekend!

Blessings,

Susan

tyNews from your School Advisory Council (SAC)

Goodbye to Two Members & Hello to Three New Members

Thank you to Diana Nunez and Erskine Williams who are both finishing their terms as members of the School Advisory Council. Their contributions during the last three years were greatly appreciated, and they will be missed.

At the same time we would like to welcome our newest SAC members, Michael Phillips, Eric Robinson, Kris Thompson, who will each serve a three year term.

SAC Chair, Catherine Glavan, has graciously agreed to serve for one more year to help insure continuity as Susan Steele retires and Kate Chambers moves into the role of principal.

Each year we have three openings, so please consider applying next spring if you are interested. SAC is a great way to get involved in the formation of policy for the school and to support the pastor, principal, and staff.

Seeking Volunteers to Welcome New Families to Madeleine School

The Bridge Program creates a welcoming community by connecting new families with current families at the school. The goal of the program is to be a resource for new families and to help them navigate their first year at the Madeleine so they don’t feel left out, lost or overwhelmed.

Each volunteer will be assigned to one or two families who are new to the school. You will check in with your Bridgefamily at least once over the summer, during the first week of school, and during the first trimester. In addition, there are three opportunities during the school year to get volunteer hours:

If you are interested in being a “bridge” for a new family, please contact Jennifer Battaglini at jennifer.battaglini@yahoo.com.

Battle of the Books Competition Recap

The Madeleine School's Battle of the Books (BOB) team traveled to St. John Fisher for our annual book battle. Our group of 25 students met each week during Thursday lunch and built community, practiced questions, and strategized as a team. I am so proud of each and every student for their commitment, dedication, and positivity this year. Each team of 5 needed to master 15 books chosen by Oregon's Battle of the Books committee. This year, each of the teams were in it for themselves and at the end of the battle, one winning team reigned! One of our school's teams came out on top. Congratulations to Mimi T., Jack C., Mia L., Evelyn R., Chase Y. for winning the Battle!

sslSt. Stephens' Lunches

We are close to our 10,000 lunches goal! 3 weeks to go!

Thank you Madeleine! Last week we collectively brought in 450 lunches, and even though it may seem making a few extra lunches on Monday night is something rather small and simple, it has a significant impact on the greater good in our community. The grateful sighs of relief I heard when I called St. Stephen’s staff to let them know - that not only did Madeleine meet their target of 400 lunches, but we exceeded it. We are so close folks, will we make it to 10,000 this year? Only 3 weeks left!

Next up is Mrs. Myers' class. They brought in a whopping 306 lunches back in October. Can they beat it? Find out next week in Friday Footnotes!

safetyChurch Evacuation Drill at all Masses

This weekend, May 25–26

As part of Father Mike’s commitment to keeping us as safe as possible during an emergency, a church evacuation drill will be conducted at the end of all Masses this weekend, May 25-26.

As you may recall, a video on how to safely evacuate the church in the event of a fire or natural disaster was shown last fall. The video will be repeated at the end of Masses this weekend prior to the evacuation drill. The 4-minute video is also available to view at www.themadeleine.edu/safety.

As you enter the church this weekend, please take a moment to review and familiarize yourself with the evacuation maps posted by each door.

When the drill begins, hospitality ministers and lectors will direct you to the appropriate exit door in the church, then down the sidewalk to the assembly area between The Madeleine School playground and the Field of Dreams.

Thank you for doing your part in keeping all of us safe.
