May 10, 2019

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I’m writing my column a bit early since everyone will be busy with the Jogathon this afternoon. I’m sure, however, it will be a great ending to this year’s Spirit Week. We are grateful to our new Jogathon chairs, Sarah McCormick, Tricia Mumm, Kelly Reavis, and Kate Dankowski for stepping up to take on our second biggest school fundraiser.

Whether you know it or not, they’ve been busy for months, procuring incentive prizes for our students who work hard to bring in pledges, coming to the Monday assemblies to get the kids excited about their run, ordering t-shirts, and so much more. Also, thank you to all the talliers and photographers, the medical team (especially in this heat!), and the set-up and clean-up crews.

We are blessed to have all of you as part of our school community, supporting our students in mind, body and spirit. The Madeleine School is a better place because of you.

The Wizard of Oz Starts Tonight

Be sure not to miss one of the two FREE performances of this year’s Middle School musical, The Wizard of Oz, right here in Parish Hall. Complete details are below in Footnotes, but for your quick reference the showtimes are Friday, May 10th @ 6:30 pm and Saturday, May 11th @ 1:30 pm.

This Year’s Auction Theme is . . .

The 2019 auction chairs are excited to unveil the theme of this year’s auction. Of course, you’ll have to read through today’s Footnotes to learn more about it. What I can tell you is that you should definitely mark Saturday, November 2 for a fun night out here at The Madeleine!

Blessings,

Susan

Celine G. Presented with Scholarship

You may remember our previous article about seventh grader, Celine G., who won a scholarship earlier this school year from Lands' End. On Monday,  a representative from Lands' End visited our school assembly to recognize Celine for her impressive scholarship entry and to present her with this $10,000 award. Celine is the first recipient of this annual scholarship, well done! Lands' End also presented the school with a $2,500 award and a $500 Lands' End gift card.

50Grandparents and Honored Guests Day

Please RSVP - Deadline is Wednesday, May 15th

Thank you very much for your RSVP as it greatly helps with the planning and purchasing of refreshments.

If you have two sets of grandparents attending, please fill out a separate form for different households. Please RSVP by May 15th.

Thank you!

RSVP through this link.

We kindly request attendance by grandparents or a student's honored guest, which may include someone close to them such as an aunt, favorite neighbor or former nanny, etc. Parents may volunteer to help with the event or may attend Mass with their child if they would like to be part of this day as well.

If your child does not have someone in this role to attend this event, not to worry. Your child's teacher will make sure all are included in the activities that day.

PLEASE NOTE: the fifth and sixth grade class will not be at school for the event due to the Oaks Park Safety Patrol Field trip. This date was beyond our control. These students may be back in time for mass if grandparents are attending with siblings in other grades.

Volunteer

We are asking for help in two hour shifts. Feel free to sign up for more than one shift. Requests are listed on the school volunteer site. All volunteering can count towards this year's hours. Thank you!

Questions? Contact Cheri Krebs at ckrebs@themadeleine.edu.

App Review: Tellonym

Parents!!! The Tellonym app is extremely popular with our 7th and 8th graders. Please, please click on this link to read the review from Common Sense Media. A few weeks ago in my middle school digital citizen lessons this app was mentioned a lot. Students in my classes gave me the rundown on how it works, their feelings around the app, and why they continue to use it (lots of “I don’t knows”). We had a really good conversation about the app that I invite you to ask your child about. The anonymity design element of the app opens the window for embarrassment, targeting, hurt feelings, etc. Please take the time to look into this app and talk to your child about it, even if it is not on their phone.

Art Show - May 23rd

An update from Mrs. Parmeter

Art show preparation is coming along nicely. I would like to thank the parents who made time to come in during the day and help students choose their three pieces to show. It's a big job to wrangle 30 kids, 30 portfolios, and 30 artist statements. I so much appreciated your presence!

To reiterate, my goal for art class is that every student becomes comfortable evaluating his or her own work and learns to trust and appreciate their own artistic streak. With that in mind, I am changing the format of the art show this year, so that STUDENTS are choosing the pieces that they want to display as well as creating an artist statement highlighting their goals for art-making this year and beyond. This aligns the art show with my long-term goals for my students; each student might pick a different combination of pieces to show! As students are choosing their work, I've noticed that I don't always agree with their choices, but I am thinking of this as an exercise in giving up control and letting this art show belong to the students rather than to me.

Volunteer Request

Currently I am looking for volunteers to "mat" pieces by gluing black paper to the back of student work. Older kids will be doing this in class time, but it would be nice to do this for the younger kids and save classroom time for end of the year art activities. These volunteers can work in short bursts before school is out and could even bring a child along if needed. I am also looking for decisive volunteers to make a plan where to put work from different classes; sort of like a layout coordinator for the art show. I would like to preserve as much as my energy for teaching as possible as we head towards the art show, so if anyone wants to take this on, I would greatly appreciate it! Contact me directly if you are interested in this task (or sharing this task with a friend).

You can find the sign up for the ART SHOW here:

www.themadeleine.edu/hours

Thank you so much for your kindness, your support, and your delightful children!

Well 6th Grade did a tremendous job this week and made 206 lunches! Thank you 6th grade!

St Stephen’s and St. Michael’s volunteers have been under tremendous pressure and are struggling to keep up with the current demands. Our donation each week helps so many, but if any of you have the time or resources to make more or bring in lunches on a Tuesday that is not your child’s class designated day, they would be very thankful.

cwFamily Fun Community Service Project

Saturday, June 1

Dunetchka Otero-Serrano and Community Warehouse would like to invite the Madeleine Community - Parents and Kids - to participate in a FUN two-hour volunteer project on Saturday, June 1st from 10a-12p.

bDetails:

Parents and kids! Come make colorful, warm, and cozy fleece throw blankets for the families who come to Community Warehouse. Community Warehouse will supply all of the materials necessary to make No-Sew Fleece Throw Blankets for clients who are moving into their new homes. What a wonderful and comforting accessory to have as clients settle into their new home. Imagine family nights on the couch wrapped in a comforting blanket. Parents and kids will work in teams of 2 to create a unique blanket for Community Warehouse to distribute to clients.

Here is an example of how we will create the blankets together:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTL6bEz8y5c

How This Helps Our Community:

Community Warehouse provides essential furnishings and household items to clients who are moving into permanent housing. Most of the items we distribute are in gently-used condition. The blankets we create together will be a brand new treat, made with love and care by our volunteers. 50% of the clients we serve are kids under 18, and we hope the volunteers on this project will appreciate the very special and unique blanket they will create for a kid moving into their new home.

Please let us know you are coming by RSVPing to mich@communitywarehouse.org
