April 26, 2019

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I’m so pleased to announce the recognition of our school counselor, Carolyn Ullman, as a 2019 “Keep Oregon Well” Mental Health Hero by Trillium Family Services. We already know what a “hero” she is in her role of helper, coach, encourager, mediator, trainer, teacher, supporter, cheer leader, advocate, champion, ally, and sounding board…in other words our school counselor. Our school community is so proud that Carolyn has been recognized for the excellent work that she does.

About the Keep Oregon Well Mental Health Heroes Awards:

Mental Health Awareness Month happens each year in May. To mark the occasion, Trillium Family Services hosts the “Keep Oregon Well” Mental Health Heroes Awards -- an annual 31 day multi-media celebration of the people, nonprofits, community groups and business leaders who have helped pave the way for Mental and Behavioral healthcare to thrive in Oregon and the Pacific NW. This year they are honoring youth and the adults that empower them to advocate for mental health and fight stigma. Watch for Carolyn to be honored as the hero on Thursday, May 2nd through Trillium’s website and social media outlets.

Trillium Family Services is Oregon’s largest provider of mental and behavioral healthcare for children and families. Each year they call upon the broader community to tell them about who have been the heroes in their lives, in their organizations, and in our state.

Congratulations, Carolyn! You are a well-deserved recipient of this award, and we feel your commitment to our students and their mental health here at The Madeleine.

Blessings,

Susan

6th Grade Fundraiser for Outdoor Schoollogo

Buy a T-shirt, Get Free Dress!

As some of you know, this year PPS did not cover the cost of the sixth grade Outdoor School trip due to changes in state law. As a result, the 6th grade class created a t-shirt fundraiser with all the net proceeds going toward paying the balance due.

The illustration on the front of the t-shirt was picked from among all of the great illustrations specifically created by the members of the 6th grade class for this project. In addition, this project was created in a way which will allow it to take place in future years to support Outdoor School.

If you are interested in buying a t-shirt, please go to www.themadeleine.edu/t-shirts. You will have the option to have the proceeds of your purchase go to the payment of the overall balance due for the entire class or to the balance due for a particular student.

All orders must be submitted by April 30th.

T-shirts will be delivered in early May. Stay tuned for an announcement of a date when students can wear the t-shirt for free dress.

Art Show - New Format this Year

May 23rd, 6:00 pm, Parish Hall

One of my goals for your children in art this year was that they begin to think of themselves as constantly developing artists. Art brings so much richness to our lives, but in order to appreciate it, we need to free ourselves from thinking of ourselves as good or not good at art--- both ways of thinking leave little room for growth or change. A major goal for art class is that every student becomes comfortable evaluating his or her own work and making observations for strength and improvement.

With that in mind, I am changing the format of the art show this year, so that STUDENTS are choosing the pieces that they want to display as well as creating an artist statement highlighting their goals for art-making this year and beyond. I think that this will lead to greater ownership and interest regarding the show; each student might pick a different combination of pieces to show!

Volunteer Help Needed

I am in need of hands to set up the event and take down work after the event and file it away.

You can find the sign up for the ART SHOW with times that I need help here: www.themadeleine.edu/hours

Thank you so much for your kindness, your support, and your delightful children!

Hooray for Madeleine Alumni Accomplishments

bhCongratulations to Brigid Hanley

La Salle announced that Brigid Hanley '19 (Madeleine Alumni, '15) has been named the valedictorian of the Class of 2019.

Every spring, the administrative team consults with the Academic Council to decide who has earned the school's highest academic honors.

The primary consideration is given to cumulative weighted GPA after seven semesters. Other considerations include courseload, grades, and the level of rigor in a student's studies.

Congratulations to Brigid!

sslSt. Stephens' Lunches

Great effort from our oldest and youngest students!

Last week our Kindergarten class brought in a whopping 232 lunches that were decorated with Easter greetings of love and hope. Thank You Kindergarten!!!

This week marked the FINAL time for the 8th graders to bring in lunches. For the last NINE years they have been doing so diligently. This particular class is quite competitive and they wanted to go out with at least 10 lunches each. They met their goal – bringing in 335 lunches, 24 extra sandwiches and a loaf of bread! During the 2018-19 school year, 8th grade supported our community project with 850 lunches. Well Done!
