The Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Miriam Thornburg, longtime parishioner at The Madeleine, on Monday, March 8 at 10:00 am. A Recitation of the Rosary will preceed Mass at 9:30 a.m. A reception will follow Mass in the Parish Hall. All are welcome. Miriam McGinty Thornburg died peacefully on March 1, 2013 of causes related to age. She was 88. Born and raised in New York City, she graduated from the Ursaline Academy in 1941 and attended college at Ladycliff Academy in Highland Falls, NY. Miriam married Samuel Thornburg in 1944. The couple raised seven children in New York and New Jersey, and moved the family to Portland, joining the Madeleine Parish in 1961. She is survived by her children; daughter-in-law Alice, Mary Krug (David), Bernadette Coughlin (Pat), Paul Thornburg (Sally), Sean Thornburg (Carol), and Michael Thornburg (Margaret), as well as 21 grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband Samuel and sons Peter and Tom (Alice). Miriam's center was her Catholic faith whose traditions she promoted with enthusiasm, grace and boundless humor for over fifty years at the Madeleine Parish. She was a stalwart member of the Altar Society and welcomed dozens of young families into the Parish. An highlight of her life was Steve Slavik's annual Northeast Portland St. Patrick's Day Parade which she Grand Marshaled two times and walked and rode in many more. Miriam enjoyed serving meals with Madeleine's "Blanchet Ladies" downtown at Blanchet House until well into her 80's. As a Madeleine School Hot Dog Lunch fixture, she was known to give out hot dogs to children who forgot their lunch money, not afraid to break the rules. To Miriam, the glass was always half full. She will be greatly missed by many, many friends of all ages as well as her family. The
family suggests donations be made in Miriam's name
NOTE:
Stations of the Cross will be held on Friday as scheduled, but soup will
